Activating free plugins without an internet connection!

Post by keithm »

There are three free plugins for Video studio 9, HDTV, DVB-TV and MPEG4. But, the install procedure requires activation from a live internet connection: so what do you do if your video editing computer isn't connected to the web?

My music and video editing PC is not allowed anywhere near the net and all of those nasty virus thingies.... This is not a great way to support a product.

Yeah, ULead seem to have gone crazy. I try and steer clear of products that require "activation" or getting through firewalls - like downloading the HDTV and MPEG4 additions require. I also steer clear of all Sony products for similar reasons - I really don't like straightjackets :-)

I have started to look at alternatives to VS. I came across a review at the following link (http://video-editing-software-review.toptenreviews.com/) which proclaims PowerDirector 4 to be a better product than Pinnacle Studio 9 and VideoStudeo 8, so I have downloaded the trial of that and will give it a go sometime in the near future. I have VS 9 but I won't keep upgrading if the policy is to require Internet activation (at least not if I can find an alternative! :-)).

I have one other program SWishMax that requires an internet connection and activation. However the program is really geared toward web development, so why would you not have an internet connection using it. In fact it is only offered through ESD, no box versions. The program is small though only about 9Megs..

As I don't have the luxury of a dedicated computer for video editing I have to have an internet connection on it. It is somewhat of a pain, keeping up with the housecleaning so Ulead runs smooth ( or just runs :) )...

Purely out of curiosity,
Since the policy change that gave us the free plug ins, has anyone purchased a copy of VideoStudio9 on CD. If so did the CD version include these plug ins.

This may be the answer to keithm's point. Obviously wouldn't apply to the rest of us who purchased it before the plug ins were made free.

IIRC HD pug-in also installs standalone

Alas I burnt my fingers on the MP4 too. Several exchanges with support finally leaked that the on-line reg (i.e. 5 installs limitation) is one of the agreement signed with Apple (owner of the plugin).
