Couple of questions re trimming and cutting

Post by DaveO »

Hello again,

I was doing some editing last night in Vs 9 and came across a strange problem.

My video was captured as one large avi file and I added it to the timeline.

I was then working through it editing it. As I moved along the timeline I would split the the video and add a transition such as cross-fade between the split.

If I then moved further along and did another split I got a dialogue box saying something like "The transition before this clip will be removed, click OK to continue".

If I clicked OK did it did as it said it would and removed the previous transition while splitting the clip. I could then add the transition back in again.

Any ideas what is going on here?

My second question is about whether it is better to trim or cut a clip on the timeline.

If I want to delete a portion of the video as far as I can tell I can do this in one of two ways.

I can cut the video before and after the portion of the video I want to remove then delete that section from the timeline.

Or I can cut the video and then set a mark-in point on the "second" clip to miss off the start of the second clip so the portion of video I don't want is not rendered later.

Do I have that right and is there any reason to choose one method over the other?

Hi Dave

The video clip in the timeline is only a thumbnail to the main file on your hard drive.
There are many methods to edit the clip, I prefer to use the scissors and trim bars.

If you cut one clip in half, the first clip to the left is usually highlighted with a dotted line and two yellow trim bars.
(Notice the other trim bar below the preview screen indicates the cut.)

By dragging these yellow bars you can reduce / remove frames from the ends of the clip. as you say you can make ather cuts to delete portions of video.

Now click and delete the right hand clip.
You have one clip remaining, in fact a thumbnail linking to the first half your main file.
Now drag the right hand yellow bar to the right (yes right) you are now moving the cut point, in fact replacing the frames, drag it far enough and the full original clip will be showing.

Have a look at ‘Navigating the timeline a Quick Cut’ from

Dave,
The transition removal trick that you describe is certainly one of Video Studio's top ten worst habits! It makes it very difficult to progressively edit a long clip, inserting transitions in cuts as you go because every time you need to make a new cut, VS throws out all your previous work of inserting transitions.

The only way around this design defect is to make all your cuts first and then insert all the transitions. I also, limit the size of my capture files to 5-10 minutes, which limits the number of cuts on a video file and helps keep the jog controls from being too twitchy.

IMHO, users should request Ulead to fix this (and other) time wasting "features" and bugs on the next release.
