Transitions

Post by steve_j99 »

I've been a user of MSP 7 for over a year, just downloaded the MSP 8 demo and am disturbed by the single-track approach -- I don't see how I can do in 8 what I could do easily in 7. Here is my problem -- I'm videoing a long concert using 2 cameras. I load both videos into the timeline (A & B in MSP 7) putting the primary one (the one I use for the sound track) in track A and am careful not to disturb it (which would create discontinuities in the sound track). I align the secondary video (track B) with track A, turn off B's sound, and begin to clip out portions of B where I want track A to be seen. I have to be careful to maintain alignment of the two tracks so that sound (from track A) and video (either A or B) remain synchronized. Inserting transitions is easy once I have the pieces of B removed.

In MSP 8 it looks like I have to chop out pieces of my 'primary' track (the one with the audio) before I can insert clips from the 'secondary' track. And how do I keep the sound & video synchronized?

Can anybody help me with this? I like everything else I've seen in MSP 8.

Just tried it and it's quite easy.

1. Place Video 1 on Track 1.
2. Place Video 2 on Track 2.
3. Select audio track 1 and right click, then choose "split", This seperates the audio from the video.
4. Do the same with the audio on track 2.
5. In your case delete audio track 2.
6. Make sure you have selected "No Ripple."
7. Select your cuts on Video Track 2, allowing the overlap at either end for the transition.
8. Select the parts of video track 1 where you want the Video on Track 2 to appear, again allow for the overlap where the transitions will occur.
9. Now drag the clip on video track 2 down onto track 1. Where the two clips overlap a transition will occur.
The audio has remained in place, none of the video has moved (left or right)

I agree that it is far easier, once you get the hang of it, than in earlier versions. Another tip, if you wish to make butt transitions, probably the most common you will use is to put the playhead cursor over the start of where you wish cam 2 to start and with either no track selected or both and press U. This will cut both tracks precisely at the same time. Repeat for the end, delete the segment in track 1 and push the segment in track 2 to track 1. Also remember that you can preview track 1 by using the "eye" and "!" icons on the left of the tracks, even when track 2 is present (see p. 53 of the manual)
