I think that's a little alarmist for a title.
Sony have admitted there is a problem as have many other manufacturers, but they are not recallling any products from anything I've read, but are offering to repair foc any affected products.

No recall? Didn't you read the links? Saying this isn't a recall is making a distinction without a difference.

What else would you call these offers to repair regardless of warranty status?

Visitors to this site will doubtless have noticed a common thread across several of our recent news items: We've reported on digital camera service advisories from no less than four manufacturers, with all four offering to fix certain problems experienced by their customers regardless of warranty status.
In our efforts to ensure customer satisfaction, Sony will offer free out of warranty repair to the owners of applicable products exhibiting the above-mentioned condition caused by the image sensor device.

For further information on the applicable products and the repair service, please click on the following links to the respective product categories:
etc. etc. etc. with Sony picking up the tab for the other manufacturers.

This is no different then what Ford does quite often, when defects are found. They issue a recall to fix the problems at no charge to the customers.

Yup. It's the CCD equivalant of a recall.
My understanding is the "fix" is to replace the CCD. The ones that are failing have cheap plastic housings, but ceramic is more durable and typical. I think the replacements are to be ceramic.

BTW: I happened to have an old Canon ZR60 that failed exactly as described. Luckily, instead of trashing it, I had simply started using it as a dedicated "tape deck", so I still had it around when I read Terry's post.

After calling the number noted on the ZR60's support page, Canon agreed to repair the unit (which I nolonger have receipt for and couldn't even say exacactly when I bought it other than having it for "a couple years") sent me a pre-paid shipping label to return the camera for repair.

Looking forward to having that camera back in action. (When working, it's used in conjunction with 2 other ZRs plus a GL2 for motion capture work. :) )
