MSP8 - Split by scene during capture - with HDV?

Post by ten18 »

Has anyone been able to "split by scene" during capture from an HDV camcorder in MSP8? This is one feature I surely miss from VideoStudio.

I know I can scan the file and split by scene after capture, but it seems to do it in real time, so it takes an hour to scan and split for every hour of video.

I record and edit a lot of high school volleyball games, and I try to mark the tape during time outs and substitutions by turning the camera off and on again. However, the timeline preview is pretty jerky with HDV (I'm not using proxy files),and it's tough to tell when scene changes occur.

If I could split by scene, it would save me about 45 minutes of editing for every hour of tape.

Thanks in advance for any information.

I use the Pixela hd capture utility that came with my JVC HD10 cam recorder. This automatically splits the scenes into individual numbered clips. I then import them into Studio Media 8 and it will state that the files need to be converted which I let it do. You can select several clips at once and do it as a batch. I don't know which camrecorder that you are using so this might not work for you.

I'm not sure, but I thought that splitting during capture was only for DV. I cannot understand why you don't use the proxy, though, to smooth out your previews. That's why it's there.

On my JVC if there is background noise the audio drops between scenes thus I like to slightly overlap or cut so the audio is smooth in the editor. I do create proxy fies when I import the captured files from the computer it is just getting the original files to the computer that I use the capture utility. I have heard of this audio problem before with the JVC but couldn't find a solution. It may be a problem with the AGC. Anyhow that is why I want to use the jvc capture utility. When I had smp7 I had terrible times trying to get ithe smp7 capture utility to work multiple crashes etc. With the jvc capture utility i can transfer the contents of the whole tape at one time without having to mark in and out and the scenes are automatically divided into numbered clips which I can then use in the editor.

You are right about the splitting during capture only being available for DV if you are using smp8 capture utility. The utility from Pixela which came with the JVC hd10 cam recorder does automatically split scenes from HD tapes. You can't scan with it but it will download and split the whole tape at one time.

I would like to use the proxy, but it takes a hour to create the proxy file for a one-hour clip. My assumption is that it's just creating a lower-res MPEG. . . Maybe that's abnormal?

Thanks everyone for the responses. I hope that Ulead includes this feature in a future release of MSP. Splitting by scene after capture takes a lot of additional time.

One thing I've noticed is that in the dialog box that opens when you select "capture video," there is a check box to "split by scene." Unfortunately, it's greyed out. Maybe that's a clue that Ulead plans to offer this feature for HDV.

In any case, I have altered my procedures so that I'm now creating the proxy files. It does make the editing process a whole lot easier!!
