Split Video Problem - VS8

Post by mortont »

I am capturing old VHS tapes through a Plextor M402U device and VS8. My PC was set-up with FAT32 file allocation. The problem is that my PC creates hundreds of 9M files instead of one file. I have to splice all of them together and the result is not too good since I can effectively see a frame video and audio flicker on the DVD. Is there a security setting somewhere in Windows XP or on VS8 that I need to disable?

I am searching through the web board but cannot find a similar probelm.

Thanks,
Tim

You don't really give us much to work on! What format are you capturing in? If it is DV/AVI (if the Plextor will even capture VHS direct to DV), then you may have accidentally checked the box 'Split by scene' in the Capture tab of VS8. But that would not account for a uniform size of 9 MB which would be only a few seconds in DV format. Frankly, in my nearly 3 years on this Board, I have never seen anyone having a maximum size of anything like that. As you may know, FAT32 imposes a maximum limit per file of 4 GB, which is around 18 minutes of DV.

Also, if you _are_ capturing in DV format, what type of Encoder is VS8 using - Type 1 or 2? IIRC, Type 2 is set as the default, yet causes problems like flickering video and/or audio on less powerful computers. Check under Options on the Capture page and change to Type 1...

Sorry, I was hoping it something simple like, tick this box, etc. Here is the detail:

I am creating MPEG2 files for DVD. The driver got loaded from Plextor into the VS8 application. I have the SE version that actually came with the Plextor device.

Video is being recorded as follows:
MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Frame-based
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 6000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 224 kbps
MPEG audio layer 2, 48 KHz, Stereo
