MSP 6.5 vs MSP 7.0

Post by jamcrky »

Hello everyone, I have the MSP 6.5 and the one area I was disappointed in was the Title effects in comparsion to Video Studio 7.0. Aside from the other benefits in MSP 7.0 are the title effect as good VS 7.0 and worth the upgrade to MSP 7.0?

Thanks much for the info in advance Jim

Hi Jim,
read all topics on this board and you can see which problems you may have if you migrate from MSP 6.5 to Version 7. I myself returned to the stable version 6.5 and gave back version 7 to Ulead. For my opinion V7 is a rather poor version as to product quality and new functions, not worth the money for upgrade.
This is only my very personal opinion!

I've never used MSP6.5, but I own VS7 and 8, and MSP7. It is possible to create title effects similar to that of VS7, with MSP7, it just might take a little more work. However, it may take a little more work to make the same looking title, but you can also customize it a lot more in MSP7, than in VS7.

I bought my version of MediaStudio Pro 7 for at a 100 dollar upgrade price at AcademicSuperstore.com (you can upgrade just by having VideoStudio) so it was worth the money for me.

MSP7.01 is rock stable. Most users are having problems with the new SP7.2. This is because of the way Ulead utilizes current hardware configurations and Dirext X on your machine. As for previous versions, there really hasn't been that many big advances in features. The big feature that 6.5 lacks is in it's encoder and encoding capabilities. That is at least one good reason to upgrade to MSP7. As for Video Studio, it is entry-level and lacks advanced features as numerous overlay tracks, compositing(chroma-key), CG, Video Paint, etc. The new VS9 is integrating some of these advanced features. It would be a better buy for the novice to intermediate user.

For titling in MSP you can use the Titler or CG Infinity module. This gives you way more control in every aspect(effects, animation, movement, gradient, customize, etc.). Also, the Titler is much slower than CG. Knowing how to use the CG module really aids your workflow in this area.

I started out with VS, upgraded to MSP, then Quartet and eventually other partner add-ons such as Boris Graffitti. However, at the heart of my system is MSP and Workshop. MSP enables you to do a wide range of video editing tasks that are not possible to do in VS. While the addition of Chroma-Key and other features are nice add-ons to VS. It remains an entry level product.

If all you're going to do is simple to average point, shoot, capture, trim, label, publish work --VS is the product for you and worth the price. I have several entry products Visual Studio, Pinnacle Studio, etc. that came with my DVD burners or I upgraded to from them. PS Studio has superior transistions (Hollywood FXs are great  ), however, the chroma-key and normal workflow results are less than stelllar VS has it hands down there.

However, none of the the entry products has the editing and workflow capablities of MSP. If you're not statisfied with the titling cabilities of MSP or those of CG, etc... I would upgrade to Quartet and look into 3D Production Studio. If you still want more titling power and flexibility --I did-- I would add on Boris Graffitti. Graffitti its about as pricy as buying MSP, but you're now at a completely different level of Multimedia work in titling. [Graffitti for titling is like the difference in flexiblity between VS and MSP in Video Editing --just a whole other level of capability 8) ]

I am in the process of developing a series of for internal use only educational DVDs for a large corporation. The features I needed far exceeded VS, the other entry products, and at times some of the prosumer and professional product suites. This has resulted --like Hollywood Studios-- in purchasing what appear to be duplicate or overlaping products to get the job done  : Serious Magic Ultra for Virtual Set Chroma-Key, Boris Graffitti for titling, and Pinnacle Hollywood FX for transistions, But at the end of the day all the other materials I create using these other tools end up on my MSP timeline for editing and final mastering in DVD Workshop.

My advice for what its worth, explore the capbilities and limitations of the products your using now. It maybe you can accomplish what you want in MSP or Quartet --just in another way. If not or the workflow is just too much explore augmenting your toolsuite with 3rd party [I found Smartsuite and Boris on the Ulead partners website and was happy that they worked so well together as well as had tech support as helpful and responsive as Uleads :D --not the case with a lot of other vendors  ]

In some cases for me the decision was time verse $$$, I could create a StarWars like title roll using MSP or 3D Studio. However, the time involved for each of many rolls pushed me to invest in Graffitti. It cut development time by an order of magnitude and rendered nicely inside MSP 8) . However, for most of my simple to average titling needs are still accomplished via Quartet and my integration and editing of all the components are done in MSP.

Hope this helps your decision making process

I am a BIG fan of Media Studio.
Clean Interface ( somehow old fashioned )
User friendly
etc etc...

Although let's be HONEST about MSP Titler.
It is a pain in the *** !!! Compared with v 6.5 !
:x

Everybody knows that MSP7 Titler has his problems.

Try to insert a Simply scrolling text with 50 lines or so, and you'll notice the amazing slow time to render !

Also in previous MSP versions you got an immediate idea of the font
you're using simply by dragging over fonts names.
(like it happens in Word, Corel, etc etc )
In MSP 7 IT IS GONE !! You select the font and only after that, you'll see the result in the preview window.

NOW about Boris Red...it is rather strange that Boris web site does not
indicate MSP 7 as a supported host.

http://www.borisfx.com/html/products/compmatrx2.html

They only recognize MSP 6.5, and in fact if you install Boris Red 3.0.2
you will get the transitions but it will not work as a Filter/Titler.

IF someone knows how to work around this please post.

Waiting for MSP 8

Just one question:

Why not do a Star Wars title roll in Windows Movie Maker? It has the effect built in. I just export it as DV then use it in my MSPro projects.
