Full Screen vs Wide Screen

Post by MLSM »

Teaching myself UVS9 & found my first burned movie plays back on DVD/TV screens a little too large...edges are cut off. All clips, transitions, etc. are at 100%. Do I have to reduce size in VStudio or can the screen/resolution size be altered at burn time? Hope the question isn't too ignorant.

I think this is "normal".
All TV sets are set to "spread" the image a little bit wider than the actual display area available at the front. I think the rationale is that if/when the picture tube gets old and starts to fail, the picture will shrink slightly; if not for this deliberate "overscan" you would start to see black bars around the edges of the screen.
If you are doing a title, VS will offer to display the "title safe area". This is the area that can be guaranteed to end up on screen. Don't put titles outside the lines.
The message is: accept a little bit of picture loss around the edges; when shooting, make sure that your subject is centred.
