*** Important DivX 6 Update
If you've been trying to use the DivX 6 codec with any NLE made by Adobe, Pinnacle, Sony, Ulead etc., then you probably noticed that the codec fails to enumerate and just isn't an option when creating AVI files.
DivX just released DivX Create V6.03, and I can confirm that this version does in fact work just like V5 of the codec did (at least with Videostudio 9).

Thanks for the heads-up, Torsten. However, I have searched through the DivX site and for the life of me cannot find a reference to any updated codec (I purchased the full DivX bundle when it was released). In the past, I recall getting messages from DivX (for the previous version which I had also purchased) advising of upgrades, but not this time. Do you have a link?
Edit: Or do you just download the whole bundle again, and re-enter your serial number? Or do you have to go through the whole installation code/ activation code again?

Sorry, I've been swamped. I stopped by the forums once but saw so many threads with new messages in them that I decided to punt and just mark them all as read.DiscCoasterPro wrote:Thoff .. heyI've been searching for ya... You been ducking? LOL I just wanted to ask you if your 300 shows up in VS9's capture module. Mine just says Unknown Device, but it works ok.
thanks,
dcp
Anyway, my ADVC-300 appears as a generic MS DV device I believe.

Ken, DivX Pro has been replaced with DivX Create, which includes the DivX 6 codec. The new version includes a program under the DivX Start menu group to check for and install updates.
If you have an earlier (V5) version of the codec, then the upgrade costs US$ 4.99 (see http://www.divx.com/divx/create/upgrade/). You can still download the V6 codec (but not the whole DivX Create Bundle) for free from here: http://www.divx.com/divx/codec.php

Ken,
Looks like the free codec and the one in the bundle are the same; having a serial number to enter when installing separates the free or 6-month Pro trial version from the retail one. I installed 6.03 by downloading the Create bundle again and using my 6.0 serial number.
I can also confirm 6.03 is enumerated in VideoStudio 8 SE correctly, but I had previously edited the registry to set HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio\8.0\VIO\AVI\EnableGlobalDivX to '1'. It didn't appear in 9.0 until I made the same registry edit for it as well.

DivX has released another important software update, a new version of their Hyperthreading / Dual-Core optimized Helium codec, now referred to as He-3:
http://labs.divx.com/archives/000064.html
I'm in the last stages of a long WMV encode, so I haven't tried this codec yet and can't confirm whether it works with Videostudio, but I suspect that it will, given that the recent V6.0.3 update fixed the enumeration issue.
If you have a Hyperthreading or Dual-Core system, you might want to play with this.

Torsten,
I've been experimenting with divx in the hope that its rumored better compression (compared to mpeg2) would permit high definition playback when burned on the limited video bitrate of a standard DVD.
However, when I converted my 1440 x 1080 mpeg2 HDV video file to divx, the Converter dumbed down the frame dimensions to 720 x 400, which really diminished the resolution. I had integrated a resolution chart into my video, which showed that the resolution dropped to the level of my 720x480 home made DVDs.
Is this limitation just reflective of the current state of Divx software development or is the compression not sufficiently good for high definition at 10Mbps?
John

How are you encoding? Are you using Dr. DivX, the DivX Converter, a custom profile, or one of the DivX-certified profiles? There are many variables involved, such as restrictions imposed by the DivX-certified playback profiles, and the fact that the DivX Converter program is lame and provides very little control over the conversion.
If you can provide me with a couple of seconds of test video, I'll encode it for you without resizing it. You may also want to check the DivX forums and read about other people's experiences with encoding HD content.

I used the DIVX Converter from the DIVX.com website. There were no controls evident to set anything except the output file name and location. I verified the frame size of 720x400 with the VLC Media player.
If you know of a freebie conversion program that will preserve the video frame dimensions, please post it.
BTW, I posted this quesion on the divx user forum four days ago and am still waiting for an answer...

Punt on DivX Converter, as I mentioned in my previous post, it is lame and absolutely pointless. The DivX guys are catching lots of flak for it, and have abandoned it in favor of a new open-source conversion tool, which of course is not available yet.
However, if you use Videostudio and Create Video File, you can configure the DivX output options and preserve the original video dimensions. Try that.

Torsten,
Video Studio is the other end of the DIVX problem. It does not offer DIVX as a choice when creating video files and Movie manager will not let me create a template for DIVX.
Is there something that I have to do to get VS9 to recognise the codec?
John
BTW, MPeg4 (Ulead's) shows up but only as a lame DVD quality 720x480...
