Hi everybody,
I may be trying to make a silk purse, but here I am..
My intention is to make both a small web site video + a 10-15 minute DVD.
I shot some footage on a rented semi-pro camera,dv-c,uploaded to a vhs, then uploaded to a pc via geo-vision dvr card.
The files were saved as .avi files.I then uploaded these files to my laptop,a 4 year old Toshiba Satellite and downloaded VS9 trial.
The avi's still play well through windows media player, but during multi-trim editing the video plays very slow and jittery.
While the avi files are 5 minutes each, the VS9 is telling me they are just over 3 minutes. When I start and stop clips, then replay they usually don't jive time wise.
It seems that the video on display, the one I am trying to edit, is not the same video that is apparently playing in accordance to the 5 minute clip.
When the slider reaches its' end, presumably at 3+ minutes, there is still 2 minutes or so to play on the avi.Its like the 3 minute vs. 5 minute clips are basing their speed on a percentage of footage completed rather than the elapsed seconds.
I hope have explained this allright.
I have played with frame-rates as I saw they may be applicable and now I have probably done a good job of screwing up what may have been very good defaults in the VS9.
Don't know if it relates, but also when playing "project" instead of "clip" the software gives an error message....something like "can't find hardware ...yadda"
This can make very interesting edits to say the least.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,BCGarden
A question of timing..

The frame rate depends upon whether you are using PAL (European) or NTSC (USA & Japan) format. PAL runs at 25 frames per second but NTSC runs at just under 30.
The replay you mention, are you looking in the "preview window" as this is normal, it is only a preview. If you render the video ie, create a video file it will play much better.
As for the missing 2 minutes, if you are previewing check that you have selected the entire timeline and not a "preview range" indicated by a couple of markers highlighting the start and end points.

Thanks for the input,
When I start/end in multi-trim,then save video file and replay none of the edits I made sync up.
For example,in multi-trim I started one avi at the 00:00 mark, and ended it at the 41:00 second mark. After saving the video,I replayed only to find that the edit didn't take place until(Ithink it was) 53:00 seconds. This occured pretty much without fail to all my trimmed clips, sometimes so far as,if I had played a minutes worth of video between start/end that I would miss the edit all together, yet in replaying the trimmed clip with the "play trimmed video" button,it seemed accurate. And while I can watch the last 2 minutes of jittery video,I can only do so if uninterrupted, and I cannot start/end clip during this time. The slider is at the end,and the counter stops at the 3 min mark (+/-)
Is there a buffer?I feel like I am watching an exponential tape delay.
Thanks BCGarden

My google search on the geo-vision card only shows up the make as being used for capturing cctv footage, is this correct?
It captures as MPEG4 not avi.
This would make editing difficult, as you make cuts at i frames and if these are several seconds apart, then you may want to cut at 41 seconds, but in fact you may only be able to cut at 38 or 44 seconds.
Why use a semi pro cam and then copy it to vhs which seriously reduces the quality? Which won't come back when converted to dvd. OK for the web.

Hi,
Yes you are may correct about the mpeg4,I'm not sure, but nonetheless the files are/were saved as avi.I don't know if this a default or not.
As for the vhs...I am shooting a rather industrial video for a piece of equipment we have developed, and with editing suites costing $150/hr or so,I thought I would at least get a rough copy put together so we're not spending 7 hours getting edit points..If I am fortunate enough to throw together 30-50 seconds for the web, that would be a major plus.
Are there provisions in VS9 to edit these files? Can I convert or otherwise find a way around this issue?
Thanks

Hi
You can edit your footage directly in the timeline.
By using the scissors in Timeline View you can cut the video at any point.
This will split your footage into smaller pieces, some you want and some to be deleted.
At the end of each clip when selected is a yellow trim bar drag this bar to fine tune / trim the ends.
Read Navigating the Timeline a Quick Cut from the link below.
I refer to a blue triangle, using VS 9 this no longer coloured but is transparent.
When complete Share Create Video File will produce a new file of your movie.
Hope this Helps
