The white/pink/red line indicates the difficulty that Instant Preview has in showing the image in real time and shows up after previewing. White is easiest and red is hardest.
The orangey-yellow and pale green lines indicate the compatibility of your project to your project settings. Where they are absent, they indicate that that part of the file needs rendering. The colours match the default track colours for video and audio, so you can see which requires to be rendered if one of them is missing.

Thanks very much. I notice that these color-coded segments appear and disappear, so it makes sense. All of the video I put in is DV-captured AVI, and the project is set to DV-AVI. THe green and orange appear where I have inserted images into the timeline, so that makes sense too -- they clearly need to be rendered.
It is explained in the manual page 90 (MSP8) under Instant Play. It is named Compexity bar. (I had also searched. I found it only by accident. I had expected that it would be explained somewhere in the explanations of the workspace e.g. page 19.)
Right clicking does not work for me, but that may be because I saw it never red so far.
