PI 10 Retail Box won't register? -Solved!

Post by sbsidlov »

:? I have a retail box PI10 - it says it's 10.0.0.1 and in the about box is a serial number. When I try to register that number (and a number of the other numbers of the Ulead products in the box/cd) I get a message that the serial number is already registered. The only product from the Cd that I have been able to register with the numbers shown is the Gif Animator v5.

Now, the interesting part is that support says it will not support you if the registration is not listed under your account.

But I can't register my 'working' copy as it won't accept the serial number.

Classic Catch22 or is this a sad way to claim I'm not entitled to support?

With the serial number already registered, it seems to me that from whomever you got the "retail boxed version" had already registered it, as you say in your query.

If it came from a "retailer," then just take it back and ask for a replacement: what they've probably done is to have taken it back from an unsatisfied buyer, re-shrink-wrapped it and placed it out for a re-purchase, and, you bought it in good faith. I had a similiar situation when I bought what I thought was a brand new scanner several years ago from a local store. I took it back, got a refund and never entered that establishment again.

If it came from a "good" friend, ask for your money back.

Very Funny. It came from Ulead. I bought it directly from the Ulead Mall via element 5 who is the 'store' for them.

Does it not let you "register" it on the website by leaving the serial number blank?

Fine. Complain to Element 5. Tell them exactly what you've told us, that you cannot register the product.

There may be an outside chance that, through element 5, you are already the registered user, in which case you ask how to use Tech Support in view of your problem.

If they cannot provide this assistance, then tell them that you'll be returning it, asking for a replacement.

Element 5's website is:

http://www.element5.com/index.html

If you get nowhere with element 5, call Ulead's US Customer Service at
1-(310)896-6396, Monday-Friday, 9:00am - 5:00pm PST

It has been quite a while since I've bought "retail-boxed" software. I'm just telling you what I would do.

Good Luck.

no, PI is one program that iit is required for. Even the ones that allow 'blank' are not llisted under "My Account" even though I have the full PI 10 package.....just annoying.

I prefer if it is reasonable to purchase the box edition. PI was reasonable, Nero (as an example) isn't. The book isn't all that bad, all the tutorials and extras are on the CD. Makes it easy to pop into the laptop. It's certainly not a download issue since I have 10mb at my house, but you know, windows, when it crashes, it takes everything with it. Life is easier with a real disk and a real book. Reconstructing XP after it dies and can't be set back to restore point, is a PITA., and I find that I lose my keys for downloaded software.....however, perhaps a generated key wouldn't have the issue of some fool printing and pasting the same number on a number of disks....but then there was the recent case where 110 different people won the same lottery because they played the numbers from a fortune cookie. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... 01772.html

And thanks for the phone number, I had already printed it out pror to my original post, I get to call about lunch time since they are on PST. I actually bought the package in June, but since I may upgrade to 11 (if I see some patches posted) I want to make sure that I can get the upgrade price.

I searched the FAQ, and the message board for the subject first -- I was only trying to ascertain that I am not the only one with the problem.. I'm no nube except to this specific forum. I have been 'online' at home and usng forums since the time that everyone thought that 1200 baud half duplex was 'speedy' and a 10mb hard drive cost $500.

Okay, it appears to be my fault, as I must have registered on the site in the past, perhaps on a different machine using a different User Id - but the same email address. Calling ULead's customer support they were able to correct it by unregistering it with the 'bad/old' user id and changed it to the new/current id. So, now, I can see all my products registered.

fwiw, it appears that the registration is just a marketing ploy and has nothing to do with upgrade purchase or support issues.
