Help creating video file

Post by bcfc107 »

I am very new to using video editing software and suspect i am missing something obvious but can someone help, i am using video editor 7 ( trial version ). I have created a project of about 1hr 20mins. When i go to create a video file it takes around 20hrs to complete ( mpeg format ).
the project is displayed as it renders. However on 1 occassion whilst making a change to the project it took only 10 mins to create the file ( 3.5Gb mpg file) which i then plan to burn using movie factory.
Is 21hrs a normal timne to create the file or am i doing something horribly wrong. Any help gratefully rec'd

The answer to your question is: there is no real answer. It all depends. System specs? original clip properties? project settings? etc.

On a lame old P2 with very little RAM it could take that long, on a modern system it shouldn't, provided all is set properly. Since you state that once you did a project in considerably less time, my guess is that you have somehow screwed up.

Heinz-oz, thanks for replying so quickly
Yes, i probably have screwed up somewhere, if i can find out where i might be able to sort it!!
My pc is P4 2.5Ghz with 1GB ram and 180 Gb HD so i dont think it should take so long. When it took 21hrs the project was running in the window above where it shows how long to go and was running really slow, like 1 frame a second, when it took 10mins it wasnt visible until the last few seconds where i had made some changes. possibly something to do with the preview range setting?. Is there a setting that turns off the video being displayed whilst rendering?

cheers for any more help you might be able to supply

Check your "Smart Rendering" settings.

Smart Render will only "process" things that have changed such as where you have added sound or transitions. Anything that has not changed is left untouched.

You will find your 21 hour job, EVERYTHING got rendered again whether it need to be rendered or not, whilst the 10 min job probably only had a few edits and so the bulk of the project did not need to be altered in any way.

If you have turned off smart render, it renders everything.
