"save as" doesn't work - FIXED!!!

Solution to "Save As" problem

Post by escp99 »

On my computer, the "Save As" problem was caused by a setting in Microsoft's Tweak UI program. I fixed the problem by selecting "Remember previously-used filenames" under "Common Dialogs."

When this is set to "off," Save As doesn't work.

I'm using WinXP+SP2 and PI11 (full version).

My "save as" works again

Post by barbinnh »

For some unknown reason, my save as started working again a few days ago. I have not changed anything (that I know of) - I clicked on it, expecting to wait for the box to come up and it popped right up. Wish I could give you some idea of what happened, but I have no idea. I'm just glad that it works again - hope it does not change again.

Hi everyone,

A fix for the problem is already posted on the Ulead KB. It was contributed by a user (I don't know if it's you escp99) but thanks whoever you are.

Yes, I sent Ulead the fix. I found the registry entry after I posted my prior message, and sent it to tech support. Glad I could help.

I cannot get your link to work. It locks up my browser and says that the Knowledge Base is not working properly. Any idea why this is happening or is it just my computer. Windows XP SP2

Below is the text of the KB article.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This fix was provided by a user. Apparently, you'll get this problem if you installed Microsoft's Tweak UI program and set the "Remember previously-used filenames" option from the "Common Dialogs". To fix this, please take note of the outlined procedure to edit a particular registry value:

1. Click "Start -> Run", type "regedit" on the command box then click "Ok" to open the Registry Editor.

2. Go to:
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\comdlg32\NoFileMru"

3. Change the DWORD value from "1" to "0".

4. Close the Registry Editor, restart PhotoImpact and you should be good to go.

Thanks so much for taking the time to type the instructions out for me. I really do appreciate. Just when I was about to give up on PI - all things are bright and shiny and new again. Thanks

PI does not support not-default, while perfectly valid, value in registry and you don't call it a bug?

Yes, it was, and still is, PI bug.

Also, Ulead tech support, the thing that isn't, was not able to find the solution. If they've tried at all, in the first place.

@Xyzzy2,

No that would not be a bug in PI. It is M$ Windows XP's TweakUI causing this to PhotoImpact..

TweakUI merely changes some entries in the registy; escp99 post confirms that the problem lies not really in TweakUI (which set a registry value- any program could do that, also the value could be changed by hand), but in PI wrong handling of unexpected registry value.

You know what grade get computer science students if their program fails because some variable is not set to "standard" value? F.

And, solution being so simple, I suspect that Ulead tech support did NOTHING to find the reason for the problem.
Have you ever heard that Ulead support asked for some basic information from user, similar to RegMon or FileMon logs? They could have solved the problem months ago...

Anyway, it seems to me that PI history comes to an end anyway.

If it wasn't a Ulead problem, wouldn't other applications "save as" break too?

However, expecting Ulead to find the cause (Tweak UI) isn't very realistic unless many users with that bug reported that they used Tweak UI.

Nice catch,, escp99!

Re-install

I found the same problem in my first installed of UPI 11. Then I uninstall it completely and re-install after reboot. It solved the problem. The problems that I can not solve and understand till now are :
* I found 3 times the UFO file was missing no where after save it. It is so terrible.
* The file name change into .#!# that can not recognized by Windows. I have to rename it manually into the correct file extension name. It always happened after I did save as.
* Hope there's will be a new feature for text box, adjustmnet allign just like text editor :D . I really need this.

Use only windows default theme. I was installed some themes, and some buttons were missing :?
Now I'm using theme from Windows Vista Transformation, and there's no problem to all function and button.
