Virtual Memory Error Message
I have recently fixed my problem with VS9 not booting p on startup, and have been editing for 3-4 days, with no problems. Tonight I got a brand new error message "Virtual Memory Low" and the program stopped responding. What is the problem with my system? 3.4 GHz, 512MB RAM 42Gb free HDD space. I have been using this program since it was released, and NEVER got this error message, so I know I have enough memory to run it, because I have run it before.

You are confusing RAM memory with virtual memory. Virtual memory is the so called 'Swap file' which lives on your harddisk.
You did not tell us anything about your project settings etc. If you are editing DV AVI format, the free space you reported is rather low. It might just be a case of your swap file running out of hard disk space to grow in.
I would clean out my temp files, free up space in my preview folder by deleting preview files I no longer need, defrag my HDD and add another disk to my system.

If this is reproducable, open Task Manager to see where all the memory is going. Also check in Control Panel -> System -> Performance how large the swap file is allowed to grow. With 512MB of RAM, I'd set it to 1GB or more (preferably set the Min and Max values to the same number to create a permanent swap file).

changing virtual memory
I had a similar situation, causing the video portion of my rendering to stop, but the audio continued to render. I expanded my virtual memory settings and the problem went away. Below are the instructions from Windows XP pro. Not sure what system you work from.
To change the size of the virtual memory paging file
Open Computer Management (Local).
In the console tree, right-click Computer Management (Local), and then select Properties.
On the Advanced tab, click Performance Options, and under Virtual memory, click Change.
In the Drive list, click the drive that contains the paging file you want to change.
Under Paging file size for selected drive, type a new paging file size in megabytes in the Initial Size (MB) or Maximum Size (MB) box, and then click Set.
If you decrease the size of either the minimum or maximum page file settings, you must restart your computer to see the effects of those changes. Increases generally do not require a restart
