MSP8: Scanning in source window leads to crash.

Post by Triton »

Hello. Here's the problem: Every time I scan through a clip in the source window, with the mouse wheel or the keyboard arrows or the window's jog dial, after a few seconds MSP crashes. The well-known "This program has encountered blabla..".

I thought it could be the file's fault, but i tried some more, and nothing changed. The files I use are in DV format, but I also used some divx avi files to test. I also had the same problem in MSP7 on this pc.

This is a real pain, as i have to save and restart MSP every now and again. Any ideas? You can ask anything you want about my pc's configuration.

Not run into that here, but I do have a thought or two.

The Preview and Source windows use the display adapters video overlay to display the preview. If the overlay isn't working correctly running through a clip quickly could cause a problem. This can happen in systems where DirectX's DLL's have been altered by other installed programs or if the display drivers are quirky.

This may sound rare, but over the years more than once I've had odd behavior in programs that use overlay fixed by uninstalling the display drivers, rebooting, re-installing or upgrading DirectX then reinstalling the display drivers.

Well, I re-installed VGA drivers and DirectX but nothing changed.
Then i thought i could try installing another vga i've got, but the problem remains.
I really don't know what to think of. Could it be my soundcard or my tv-tuner card? There isn't much left to blame, anyway.. :?

Update: I found out that this problem only occurs with large files.

I used a 2minute-long DV file and no problem at all.
So, i guess i have to chop up all my large DV files.
Is there anything else i could try?

The small files probably aren't a problem because of the HDD and system IDE caches.

Do you have SMART HDD monitoring turned on in your system BIOS? That can cause hiccups in HDD access with large files.

The DV files are in a brand new and pretty quick Seagate SATA drive.
I'll move one of them to another drive and try again.
I'll also try disabling SMART.

Could it be cause of temp folders or something similar? Because the DV files are like 10-13GB each.

Doubt it would be the temp folders unless they're still stored on the C drive.

'tis better to move 'em to a separate video drive not on the same cable connection as the C: drive. Otherwise if Windoze decides to access the swapfile or do some other unfathonable disc access while you're scrubbing the two actions could conflict.

Are you viewing the audio track as a filename or waveform. I have had "problems" when using the waveform mode with scrolling the timeline. It's like it has to read the file to display the waveform but trips over itself. Works fine if it's only showing the filename. So now I only use the waveform mode when I'm trying to align audio.

Here's a little update on my problem.

It still remains, but i found out that it's the audio part that causes it.
Importing the exact same DV file but without audio, everything works fine.
Tried using the onboard soundcard instead of the E-mu, but still.

Any ideas, guys??

I had the same problem when I first installed MSP8, large or small files.
That was on the Try Before You Buy internet activated program.
I subsequently downloaded another ESD version and installed it, haven't had the problem since.

ESD is the beginning of the file name of the on-line download from either Elements 5 or Ulead.

As far as I know there are two versions of the Electronic Download for Media Studio Pro. The one from Elements 5 is MSP8_TBYB_E_8.00.0028.exe, the one from Ulead is MSP8_ESD_FULL_E_8.00.0028.exe. The first file listed I installed and had the problems you are having. After I downloaded the latter version the problems went away.

Also the first version had problems with a hot fix from Ulead, seems the fix couldn't find the software even though it was installed. The fix for the hot fix is now on Ulead's site, the fix is supposed to install in either version of MSP8 and allow the installation of Smart Composer without problems, only time will tell.
