Possible PI 11 bug with MASK

Post by tommy1de »

I have the new PhotoImpact 11. When I apply a layer mask to a photo, use the white to black gradient tool to select a gradient mask, then select “MASK” to change the mask into a gradient selection, and then select “LEVELS” (so I can apply correction to the selected photo), a severe brightness is applied to the entire photo. This occurs as soon as I select the “LEVELS” function, thus, ruining the photo. This also occurs when selecting any other “ADJUST, PHOTO OR EFFECT” function. This is a problem with the original PI 11 and with the latest patch applied. (Sorry for the cross-post)

Downloaded the trial version a few days ago. When I try to use the Smart Download feature I get 'cannot get URL from push file'. I have been successful at downloading some of the programs from the web site but I can't get all that the program says I need. Tried to download Component Designer from the site and get the message 'setup program cannot find PhotoImpact 11 on your system....'. So I can't get it through the program or from the site.

unknown software exception

Post by piktor »

I get an reproducible errormessage from Windows:
"unknown software exception"
this appears two times and then PI iss shut down

Here the procedure to get the error:

- open PI
- open image file
- choose "ExpressFix" from menu "Photo"
- "general exposure": choose a presetting from #1 to #4
- "object exposure": choose a presetting from #1 to #4
- click on "colored mixture"
=> the errormessage appears

The error doesn't depend to a special image, it happens with every image.

my system:
W2K SP4
PI 11.0.0.1

I use a german version, so I'm not sure about the translation of the menu entries.

I have used PI since Version 3. Ulead seems to add fewer and fewer features and fixes fewer and fewer bugs (the Microsoft model) with each release. I have strongly recommended PI to my friends and co-workers for years but with PI 11 I think I am done. There are many gratuitous changes that significanltly degrade performance and usability and a clear unwillingness to fix bugs after a single "fix pack". The kinds of help I get from support is "Working as Designed", which when the design is broken is no help at all. PhotoImpact has become a backwater program that appears to be simply a pain in the butt for Ulead. Photoshop is more expensive but at least it works.

miniviolet wrote:I've seen at least 2 other posts about this, so I thought I should post it in the problems. PI 11 has been running great for me, but last night I had my first problem. I opened up the program after having to use "end task" to shut it down, and after opening there was nothing but a gray empty workspace. Using some of the function keys I could get the easy palette to appear, but that is it. No toolbars, no menu bar, nothing. The only answer I've seen in the other posts is to uninstall and re-install. I'm not a happy camper right now. Getting ready to uninstall.

Here is what I copied from another post about the same thing:
Now when I open PI 11 there are no menus or anything, just a blue bar at the top that says PhotoImpact & the gray bar at the bottom that with the mask, ruler etc. icons. I can get some windows to open using shortcut keys, but cannot get the file menu, tool bar or anything.

Hello friends, this it is my first post:

With regard to that commented by "miniviolet" the solution it is the following one:

To copy any file of \ PhotoImpact11\Profiles e.g. Advanced.xum to the folder
C:\Documents and programa\Ulead Settings\[user]\Datos Systems\Ulead PhotoImpact \11.0\profiles
and to change the name the file to Current.xum this way recovers the correct parameters of PhotoImpact.

The problem usually happens when PhotoImpact falls and it is blocked, doesn't keep the configuration correctly.

Same here. I have used PI since at least that many versions, and I have bragged about it to my PS-loving cohorts until my face is blue. Now, with version 11, I am literally embarrassed. I have tried every trick in the book to get this running right short of reformatting my drive (sorry, three tries to get a program to start is completely unacceptable) and I only use PI11 now when absolutely necessary. Suffice to say, I have had to become a PS user or not get my work done. Thanks Ulead for your stellar performance!

"IE doesn't have to be your default browser; PhotoImpact 11 just needs Internet Explorer installed to work correctly." :? - quote from trial download page.
I had the trial on my hp nc6000 laptop once and it worked. Laptop stolen out of back of vehicle  while shopping. I wonder if those having problems don't have IE installed ? Wonder what it does too !

Rounded Rectangle: Fixed Radius Does NOT work

Post by silentwf »

How to replicated:
Open up any document (a new one is fine too)
Select the "Path drawing tool"
Choose "Rounded Rectangle" (or square)
Go to the "Tool Settings", and then check "Fixed Radius" (input any value desired)
Draw a rectangle or squre

BUG: I am unable to create a fixed radius round rectangle by doing so.

A couple of problems I'm encountering:

1. Resizing images - every image I've resized (not batch) has turned out different from what I have specified - 300 x pixels is anything but and can be anything from 204 to 384 x pixels - often I have to have 3 goes before the resize is correct. This is done via the Adjust / Resize image diag.

2. When I unlock the padlock on the Attribute Bar when transforming (so the aspect ratio is disabled), the padlock will relock when resizing resulting in a distorted image.

An annoyance - why doesn't PI11 remember the last task in Quick Command Panel? - I get tired of resetting it.

And no, I haven't applied the patch. My PIXL is crashing all the time and while PI11 is up and running, I'm not risking anything :)

I have also tried to disable the splash screen because it overrides every other program / page I'm on. I have put the "/n" after the IEdit.exe as we could do in PIXL but no go. PI11 loads incredibly slowly but to have that girl staring at me as well for longer than I need is a pain :)

My advice to Ulead / Nova / whoever runs the show now is: please iron out these problems BEFORE putting out a new version. We love our PI but lots of us are getting so frustrated (esp with the program running on newer, faster systems) that we are turning elsewhere (reluctantly I might add).

This happened to me again today. I was getting ready to uninstall and checked back in here this morning and saw this fix. I tried it and it worked! Thanks so much ArdiIIa!

PI11 Memory Leak

I recently had about 500 jpg images, about 2400 x 1900 pixels, to reduce to about 1200 x 950, for importing into videos. I used batch convert Resize/Save/Close All, in batches of ~25 images at a time (avoiding undue use of the virtual memory). At the end of the operations, I closed PI11. The memory used was not fully recovered and other operations became hellishly sluggish. Had to reboot to recover it.

You have to open it with PhotoImpact.
either Open PhotoImpact first and select
File | Open and then navigate to it
OR
When the box appears asking you to select which program to use
if PhotoImpact is a listed program - select it, otherwise you have to navigate to iedit.exe
