List of problems with PI 11

The reason why there is no response to the "save as" problem, encountered by Jake is possibly the failure of any one of us to reproduce this.
After a long hesitation, I went and installed PI 11 ESD on one of my machines. I have not been able to use it a lot yet but made a point out of trying the problem areas mentioned in this thread.
My findings so far are:
1. the "Smart Download", as we all know, is anything but
2. Unable to reproduce the text problem. I can type any letter/font, no problem.
3. "Save As" does exactly what I expect it to do.
4. Importing RAW images (CR2) format works well and saving as 48 bit Tiff or UFO did not cause any dramas.
Hence, I can say "I'm happy with it!" so far.
I just wanted to save an edited jpg file to another name so as not to overwrite the original file, but the 'Save As' function didn't respond after clicking the 'Save' button.
It's been a week since Jake first reported the problem but I couldn't find any further comment in this forum.

I reported the problem to Ulead support. I engaged in some troubleshooting with them that did not solve the problem. They've told me that its a problem that some users are having and they are in the data gathering stage in trying to find a fix. I encourage you, and any other users who have the problem, to report the problem to Ulead Support via Ulead's support process. The more input Ulead gets from people having the problem, and the more information Ulead is able to obtain, the sooner we will get a fix.

I can only second that. But, please, no blanket statements like: It doesn't work. That's not going to achieve anything. What's needed is as much detail about your particular hardware/software set up as possible. We can only get a fix if we can narrow down the reasons.

Re: RAW Conversion to 48bit
Why add the 48bit option if you can’t do anything to the image then after saving it as tiff or ufo? Seems worthless to me IMHO.JM Dean wrote:Converting a RAW file to 48bit I am unable to use any tools on it. Is this normal?
Depends on which tools you are talking about. Most only work on 24 bit RGB images. RAW format is not a format that you can use to print etc. It allows you to do basic image manipulation like whitebalance, sharpening etc., normally performed by the little processor inside your camera, on a more powerful platform. It is also virtually uncompressed and you have access to a lot more detail and color variation.
Once your basic image is to your liking in regards to color reproduction, brightness, sharpness etc. you have to convert to 24 bit format in order for other PI tools to be functional.

Do you shoot in RAW? There is a lot more to it than meets the eye. The reason to shoot in RAW is to capture as much detail as you can and to stor it uncompressed and unprocessed. These images are humongous. It is not meant to be a consumer end standard. My Canon EOS 350D shoots RAW + JPG. The JPG image comes in at around 4.5 MB, the RAW at around 10 MB. When I convert the RAW image to 16 bit per channel RGB = 48 bit, the image is around 40 to 45 MB.
As I said before, and I don't claim to be an expert in this either, once you have done your basic processing of the image, as the name suggests, we are dealing with RAW data from the imaging chip, you can save the image as a 48 bit tiff but there is not much consumer software around that can do much more than converting it to 24 bit RGB in order to work with it. ULEAD have not added the 48 bit capability to let everybody have another toy to play with, but rather to bring it in line with other professional mage editing programs. It makes sense to let a pro sumer import his RAW images into PI and do the basic image manipulation like whitebalance, sharpening etc. on a more powerful plattform than any digital camera will ever be. The amount of numbercrunching required to have any of the PI tools work on a 48 bit image would choke any of the current PC's and is just not necessary.

I have a screen shot of this problem, but there is no public image gallery to upload it to. Any ideas?davenz wrote:
Smartdownload still wont get files from Ulead. They say it is fixed; I disagree. On my system I have 9 files in 3 categories left (according to the smart download dialogue). Selecting them and hitting download shows the download dialogue and the files appear to download, except when done, the entry doesnt disappear from the available file list. It stays there and no matter how many times I update content or try to download these last 9 files will not clear.

I'm gettng a little tired of the patronizing approach users are gettting on these boards. When you click on a radio button and it doesn't work. It simply doesn't work. Sometimes a simple statement is true. I've given Ulead a complete rundown of my system, including a Belarc Advisor printout of my complete system specs. So, don't patronize me unless you know what you're talking about.JAKE wrote:ttomomo:ttomomo wrote:I have the same problem with Jake who reported on 15 October about the failure of the "Save As' function.

Re: RAW Conversion to 48bit
Yes I do shoot in RAW and applaud PI for the RAW conversion now. Hope to see more in future releases. I shoot with a 10D and hope to upgrade to a 5D in the near future. I do not use PS as I think the cost outweighs my need for just an image editing tool. That and the fact PI also accepts plugins made for PS. I am probably one of the few photographers in my line that does not use PS and am very proud of the work PI can do for me.heinz-oz wrote:You are missing a vital point.JM Dean wrote:Why add the 48bit option if you can’t do anything to the image then after saving it as tiff or ufo? That being said, when I downloaded PI 11 I noticed that the RAW conversion tool (which now works for my camera type, thank you PI!) has the option to save files to 48bit. So I tried this. After saving as 48bit I was unable to do anything to the image (a model image). Such tools, as the touch-up tool were worthless. Keeping track with what others use, (PS), I downloaded the latest demo and all tools work for the 48bit image. Maybe I am confused here but just trying to figure out what the 48bit conversion is for if I can’t do anything to the image afterwards, yet with other programs I can.

Save As ...
Jake,
I've reported the problem to Ulead Support Team.
I'm running a Pentinum 4 desktop PC with Windows XP Pro SP2, ZoneAlarm Pro and Norton AntiVirus. This, I think, is a very common specification most people will be using.
Hoping that Ulead will soon have the problem solved.

this happened to me when i hit ctrl+shift+S for a "save as"Friendlyvn wrote:I have a problem: PI close sudently when i'm working ?
the program just closed...
also, most of my fonts do not work... all i get is a HUGE yellow box where a sample of my text should be...and if i select it, i get a message saying "unable to render object" or something very similar about object... note that ALL of these worked in PI10 flawlessly
my tools stick to the borders of my projects...i cannot take my tool past half way out of the project area...

Suggested FIX for PI 11 ffom ULEAD Technical support
Here is a copy of an email i received. Appears to have fixed some things for me...
Will keep you posted.
************************
You have way too many problems. Try reinstalling PhotoImpact to make sure there are no corrupt program files. Simple reinstallation or repair from the control panel might not be enough. Please perform the reinstallation procedure this way:
1) Launch Windows Explorer and go to tools\folder option\advance setting to check "show hidden files and folders".
2) Purge/delete all the files in these folders:
"C:\Windows\Temp"
"C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp" (for WinXP)
3) Uninstall PhotoImpact from control panel Add/Remove programs
4) Delete the folder "C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead PhotoImpact 11"
5) Reinstall PhotoImpact 11.
Download and install the additional components from this site:
http://www.ulead.com/pi/esd.htm
Note: Make sure you still have a copy of the installer before you uninstall the software. Before installing, please temporarily close other running programs or applications including antivirus, norton utilities, screensaver, other memory resident programs including Internet connection, etc. to avoid unnecessary conflict and restrictions within your system.
Will keep you posted.

More problems with PI 10
Did you post your system details here for the supervisor to check for you?
I stll have version 10 running alongside 11. Once it runs trouble free for a month I will rmeove 10 from the system.
good luck, I hope it gets resolved.
May I also suggest you email directly to ULEAD technical support as well.

Did nothing for me. E,S,D,N not working but can be overcome by refreshing "My Workspace". Cannot do Screen Capture. PI11 is useable but I still revert back to PIXL because I am sure of the output that I will get.
Hopefully a patch will be issued in the fullness of time.
I have been around software for some time so I know that there can be teething problems.
Remember what they used to say in the days of the Wild West, "Never be a pioneer! Pioneers get arrows in their backs!!"
