Audio Lag

Post by Rick »

I have made a DVD movie from a VHS tape, after making a few coasters,
BUT I have some Audio Lag.
I am using VS7SE
Any Ideas? :)

Does the original file that you captured from the VHS tape exhibit the same problem? Did you follow the procedure that is outlined in the topmost post in this forum?

The VHS tape has no lag

The file that I captured onto the DVD DOES exhibit the same problem.

As far as I can tell I did follow the procedure that is outlined in the topmost post in this forum.

Tha lag is about 2 seconds at the start of the video and gets worse as the video goes on.

Please help with any Ideas

I didn't ask about the original tape, I asked about the file that you captured. I'm trying to figure out if the audio and video were out of sync following the capture process, or if it happened during the DVD creation.

Please post a detailed description of your system and the steps you are going through to create the DVD.

Once again: I am asking about the file that you captured from the tape to your computer, not what was burned to the DVD. We keep going in circles...

Sorry I ment to say The file that I captured onto the DVD DID exhibit the same problem before capturing it onto the DVD. The reason I'm confused
is I did editing to alot of different clips, saved them as one file, then burned the DVD.So yes the file that I burned onto the DVD did have the audio lag.
I hope this clears up the confusion.

I give up. I'm more than glad to lend my time and experience to help out people who have problems, but I want to spend it productively. You still haven't answered the question that is at the core of the problem: did the file or files that you captured from the VHS tape have an A/V sync problem?

Until you come back with a clear answer in addition to detailed information about your system and what you are doing, I don't see the point of continuing this.

After saving them as one file, (BEFORE BURNING) play the file using one of your media players on your pc.

do you have an AUDIO sync' problem.

Rick,

THoff & Trevor Andrew are trying to help you figure out when the problem is creeping in... It could be during capture (it could be your capture device), during editing, or during final rendering/burning.

Quiting myself - :)
Are you editing MPEG files? If so, I can give you some suggestions. (Well, the first suggestion is to use another format, if possible.)

Hypothesis -
The original audio & video files are multiplexed (woven together in one file). As long as they remain multiplexed, they cannot possibly get out of sync.

Video Studio de-multiplexes them, and then re-multiplexes them. At some point during the process, one of the files (audio or video) changes length, or gets trimmed at a slightly different point from the other. When the audio and video are re-multiplexed, they don't align.

I to have sync problems

OK, after reading all this I can better state the problem I had. This is really an appeal for help. I use an ATI All-In-Wonder analog video capture from a VHS tape using S-Video port. the tape was captured in MPEG because I didn't know any better I guess. I actually stayed away from AVI because the video quality wasn't particularly good and the AVI file size was enormous. The delay appeared immediately after importing to MPEG. I also had a small delay at the beginning and a several second delay after about an hour of the recording. Question, how do I eliminate the delay? Good things to do and bad things to avoid would be nice. I have a Pentium 4 2.8GHz processor and 768 MHz of RAM and 120 GHz hard dirve.

Are you getting dropped frames during capture.
have you activated the drop frame counter.

Drop Frame Counter

C:/
Documents & Settings
All Users
Application Data
Ulead Systems
Video Studio 7

Open

UVS.INI

INFORMATION

Change Show Drop Frame Counter from =0 to =1

Save the changes.

What are your capture settings?

During capture, turn off all programs running in the background, E-Mails etc including screen saver.

Thanks Trevor

Yes before burning, the file HAS audio lag.

I am using VS 7se. (ADS DVD express) (CAP WIZ) The other settings "Drop Frame Counter", I am not sure how to find them. I could not find the "UVS.INI" file.
were do I find the capture settings that you need?

I have captured other videos from VHS tapes with no audio lag,but there was not much editing involved. I don't know if that matters or not? As far as I know, all the capture settings were the same, unless I changed something without knowing I did.

Thanks for hearing!

Hi
Capture / clip properties.

Right click a clip in the timeline and select properties.
This shows you the clip/video properties which should be the same as the video capture.

Project properties.

From file/ project properties
Ideally the project properties should be the same as the capture.

Drop frame counter:-
You are using VS 7se, don’t know if you can view the counter with this version, but I would assume yes.

Video Studio 7

If you cannot find the UVS.INI use the search on your pc.

I do not know about CapWiz, i assume its some form of interface for capturing analogue to digital?????????

If you have captured in the past without problems, then I suspect your settings may have changed.

Actually, in VS 7, it is not the UVS.ini which needs changing to show the drop frame counter, but the HerCap.ini file -- which is found in the same location. (Do a search if you can't find it manually, making sure you also search all hidden files.) Then in that file, find [CAPTURE_SETTING] and on the next line type in ShowFrameNumber=1 (make sure there are no spaces). Save the file. Launch VS 7 and in the capture window, you should see the dropped frame counter (though I don't recall if this works with the SE version).
