Post by Ken Veal »

Can u rescue me please!
Is there any that can be done about the following
files that keep being mentioned in error reports that try to close down VS9
(retail version).Work can still be saved before the dialogue box is closed
+ if I ignore the box I can carry on working on my project but have to keep moving the box out ot the way.
The files are
C:\docume~1\kenv~\locals~1\temp\ 312-appcompat.txt
and 5113, 893e 7dbs and b3fa
dv avi from firewire dig cam.C:57gb nfts D:114gb fat 32 media drive athlon 1700+ 1.3gb 1.5gb ram xp pro sp2.
Also, what is the easiet way to get clip no (ie) from 93 to no4. Thank u in anticipation. editman

Have you tried removing those temp files? I assume you know where they are despite the weird looking name that appears on screen. I think you have to have 'show hidden folders and files' activated for this directory: C:\Documents and Settings\Ken Veal\Local Settings\Temp I regularly (about twice a week) clean out that Temp file because most programs, when installing, set up temp files there. The better programs delete them once the installation is complete. But some programs do not and the files quickly build up and the potential for conflict grows with them...

I am also intrigued by the fact that your D drive is still formatted for FAT 32. Theoretically there is no reason why it should not continue to work with your NTFS C drive, but do you have a specific reason for keeping the other filing system on it? And can I assume that your video files are stored there?

As for your final question ("what is the easiet way to get clip no (ie) from 93 to no4."), I am afraid I cannot understand what you mean. If you mean to move it from slot 93 in the timeline to slot 4, unless anyone else has a helpful suggestion, the only way I know to do that is the long way of dragging it back across the timeline to the place you want to put it.

Drag it to Libe, then go to Timeline spot desired, and drag back in. Then delete orig clip from Timeline.

Keith -- a question based on my ignorance: has this changed in VS 9? IIRC, in VS 7 and 8, if I tried to insert a clip from the library pane into the timeline, it automatically went to the end of the timeline and I then had to drag it to the desired spot. Yet you are now suggesting it can be done...

VS9 error reports

Post by Ken Veal »

Thank u 4 the prompt replies.My video projects r in the D: drive,it is Fat32
as a result of me misunderstanding the advice in the manual re 4 gig
captured file size.
I would very much appreciate details on exactly how to find +
delete those files.
I was moving the clips via the expanded storeyboard view but
it seemed a bit of a performance having to keep moving up the window
for each clip.

Kenneth,

That error message string points to a particular group of files, one of which is 312-appcompat.txt... It might be interesting if you can actually open and read the file particularly this text file which seems that it might contain information regarding application compatibility... I have heard of attempts to do this before which have been fruitless and attracted messages something like Permission denied unable open the file which might be on another drive and is no longer accessible...

Could be a clue to some root problem...??

Ken -- I gave you the location of these files in my first post above. As I also said, you have to enable 'view hidden files' as the directory is normally hidden. Also make sure you don't have VS operating at the time you delete the contents of Temp.

I used to have that same problem when I used VS8 ie it said that VS8 wanted to close, but just shoving the error box out of the way, it carried on regardless. I have not had this problem after upgrading to VS9. Have you tried to re-install VS9 in case you have a corrupt file somwhere in your installation.

VS9 error mesaages+ accessing clips.

Thanks for the replies people,
Deleting the temp files seems to have solved the problem of error messages.Windows would not open any of
them.I can also move to different storyboard clips quicker too!.
