Can you hear me?

Post by daveysue »

I'm in the process of doing a voice over at the post prod stage of a film I'm making. Can anyone recommend a good voice microphone which produces professional quality results.
I'm based in the uk by the way.

Many thanks

You did not mention your budget. Sky is the limit !
You can get a Rode NT2 for around 200 pounds from Turnkey (in UK).
But since I am not an UK resident, it may be possible that you can find
the same mic from a cheaper place.

Furthermore, you do not mention what kind of sound card you do have in your computer. It is most likely that you will also need a MIC-Preamp.

Cheers,

There are many excellent mikes available, with various characteristics. The names Sennheiser, AKG, Beyer etc. spring to mind. I suggest you look at their web sites and choose the model/price combination that suits you best. However, if you use it only for voice work, you don't need to spend a fortune. The mikes you see on TV for news reportages are rarely top-of-the-range. However, unless you have a decent sound-proof studio, I suggest you should concentrate on noise-cancelling models, which means that the lips-mike distance should normally be small.

Lapel Mic

We use a Sony ECM-55B lapel mic for most voice over stuff. It's a very clear and crisp sound and being a lapel mic, it's close to the mouth.

Forgot to mention

Hi,

I forgot to mention that we do have a Beachtek pre-amp and a Spirit Folio RacPac mixer to allow the XLR based mics to plug into cameras and other kit.

The pre-amp allows us to do voice only interviews (for voice overs) with a minidisc player and the Sony lapel mic - anywhere and with minimal kit. Example: On a church roof with a land artist.

The racpac mixer allows a bit more detailed, noise free voice over work recording at home not to mention pre-recording EQ. I hadn't thought of one of those Rhode mics, that sounds really good. If you need to use the mic in the field as well though I wouldn't be taking the Rhode anywhere!
