Flickering Still Images

Post by mark@chateaudelacouronne »

Hi - Before all those eyes start rolling, please bear with me - I'm relatively new to this.

Making a DVD slideshow of B&W still images, caught on digital camera, the images flicker like mad when viewed on TV. Any TV - I've tried several. Not all the images do it, but the ones that do tend to have lots of detail. It's pretty irritating to the eye,and makes it difficult to view.

I've updated my programme to 7.3 from the website, which mentioned the flickering problem, but still the same. I've turned on the flicker filter.

I know I should know this, and I've tried to eductae myself about it, but the DVD I've made is Frame Based. Is this correct? The manual and help site say that Frame Based is for viewing on a PC, so should it be Field Based, and could this cause the problem?

Apologies for asking what I'm sure are dumb questions to those who are better informed.

I suggest you try making your DVD as lower field first. It is true that your images are not interlaced, but your TV expects an interlaced signal. I'll bet a pound to a penny they look fine on your computer screen, which doesn't like an interlaced signal.

I've had the same problem. Now when I use images (6 and 8 Mp) at forehand I downsize them to 35% (i.e. with Photoimpact) with 2 pixels Guassian blur.

That resolved it for me. Now they appear smooth at the TV screen.

It's the way TV's display (alternating scan lines). You dont have to go the way of a gaussian blurr as suggested (nothing wrong with that) but just 2 pixels vertical motion blurr had the same effect for me.

Or select "flicker reduction" in media source options, which does essentially the same thing.

Well that option won't help you mucht. I can tell you after a lot of experiencing. The difference with that option is virtually invisible to the human eye.

Would be nice if it did :?

If there is a lot of fine detail in your image, it will still flicker

Ooops, randazzo beat me to it

Thank you all very much. What a wonderfully helpful usergroup - I was expecting a fair bit of sarcasm and "Oh Duh" type responses, having seen a few other groups in action, but far from it. I will try the different, very useful, suggestions. Again thanks for making a newcomer so welcome, and for your patience.

Heinz-oz,

By the way...

Which filter do you use to add 2 pixels of vertical blur?

Thanks in advance.

In PI 10 I use a 0 degree motion blur with a 2-3 pixel intensity. It's in the Photo menu.

Heed the words of the master  it was Terry who pointed me into this direction a long time ago.

Thanks Terry, and good to hear/read from you. Keep up the good works.
