Problems with Saving trimmed video
iam using videostudio 7SE it came with ADS Instant Dvd 2.0 and i have captured vhs and 8mm tapes but when i go into VS to trim them down only some of them actually become trimmed others do not. they are all being captured on the same setting through moviefactory. some files are 7gigs and thats with only 40min of actual film and 1hr and 20min of nothing. when i go to trim off the nothing part everything works but the file remains at 7gigs and it still remains at the full 2 hours the time length does not change. this has worked for other captured films when trimming will trim the allotted amount and make a smaller file. is there an easier way to do this? why do some work and some don't? will it work better if i bought the original version of VS instead of this which came with the capture device??

Perhaps I misunderstand your post, but it sounds like you are capturing an entire tape including significant sections with no content. If so, your captured source file will be large. Any trimming you do does not make the source file smaller, it merely puts markers on the source file where trimming will occur.
To get a smaller source file, you could try capturing only that part of the tape that has video content.

Or, after cutting the source file where desired and deleting the portions you want to remove, you can go to the Share tab and create a new output file in whatever format you desire -- this would only contain the portions of the original video that are left in the timeline.
Incidentally, there was a bug in the Save Trimmed Video function that was fixed in a patch. I know because when I was using V7, I was sent an updated DLL by Ulead's tech support to address this issue before a patch was released to the public. I'm sure the fix has since been rolled into the patch available here, so if you haven't updated UVS yet, I would do so.

Is it just me, or is there something confusing about the term "Save Trimmed Video"?
If you trim your fingernails, the "trimmings" are what come off you.
On the other hand, a "trimmed" video clip can be what is left after you trim parts off it. Or possibly it's the part that came off.
Why is there a choice to "save" what is left, or "save" what is cut off? I've never liked the sense of confusion this gives me, and haven't felt comfortable using this feature because I don't yet understand why one would need the option.
Comments?

Save trimmed video
I'm having the same problem as Ford....VideoStudio 7....Have downloaded all the patches.
Following the instructions for editing that several of you have posted and managed to trim the video correctly. After saving the video file it is still the same size as the original file.....Even after deleting all the portions of the video I don't want I can check the file properties and it still the same size. Even though the duration shows the correct time it is mysteriously larger than it appears.

Hi
The clip in the timeline is just a thumbnail pointing to the main file on the hard drive.
Editing this clip will in no way alter the properties or size of the original file.
Right click and select properties will show the size of the main file.
Trim the clip and ‘save trimmed clip’ will make another file saved in the working folder.
And will be smaller than the original.
The thumbnails on the timeline will reduce in size to reflect the cut frames, but these thumbnails will still point to the original files, which have not been altered and are still the original size.
Just to confuse things more, if you now hit the ‘undo button’ you will return the timeline back to normal, still retaining the ‘cut-saved trimmed video’ in the working folder/library.
To use the new file you will have to drag it from the library, where VS has placed a thumbnail.
Personally I do not use this function, I keep my editing to the timeline and scissors or trim bars, then create one final video file at the finish.

Save trimmed clip
I understand every thing you just said...When I select 'save trimmed clip' the file will still be the same size. It will look like it has been edited but the file is still the same bytes as before. Example:
I have a 3 gig file.....using the scissors and the timeline I cut it in half...I select save trimmed clip....the render bar starts counting....when it finshes...I select share and save video file....go to 'my computer' and the file is still 3 gig....I have two files now at 3 gig each!!

Hi
fordpower250
Dont give up yet its early days.
Have a look at one of the tutorials by Brian
http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/brians_ramblings
A Personal Ulead Video Studio Help Website
Read the ‘Edit in Timeline’ this will help you understand a different approach to editing.
Once you get used to the scissors and trimbar its easy.
then come back with more questions
All the Best

emcee,
I agree it does take a while to become familiar with this feature but it does work.
There is a lot of good advice here but certain things are key.
Note where your working folder is in File - Project preferences, this is where your trimmed video will go automatically with a unique file name created by VS.
From your last post you describe:
"....the render bar starts counting....when it finshes...I select share and save video file.... "
When you observe the render bar counting that is Video Studio saving (or I should say re-rendering) that clip of the video to the working folder.
You do not need to select share and save the video file again. The clip is already in the working folder.

Correct and the file or clip should be 1.5 gig in size right?
I find this program to be very easy to use..this is the only issue that's not working on it. I think there is a patch or fix somewhere that I'm supposed to have but it's not listed on uleads web page anymore.
I have read other post on this forum referring to it but I go to the web page and it's not listed....I've installed the ones that are there.

should i buy version 8
should i buy version 8, is this an isolated problem with 7? does it work with 8?

I think I get it.
So you have a video open on your Timeline....you cut sections out and they go over to your library, automatically, as an icon.....and what is left in your Timeline is NOT the piece of video that you want.....you delete everything in your Timeline and then drag the pieces that you do want from the library to your Timeline. I'm at work so I can't do this except in my head, which has fallen-off a few times today.
Ford250 can you try this procedure and see if it works for you?

Maybe we can approach this "problem" from a different angle. Let's use a question:
Why do you expect the 3-gig file to be smaller after you have carried out some editing changes?
You can edit the hell out of that 3-gig file, discarding much of it; but it will still be the same size on your hard drive.
When you Share > Create Video File, a new file will be created incorporating all your cuts, and THIS file WILL be smaller than the original, if your cuts have been significant and your editing additions are not massive. But you'll still have that original 3GB file on your HD, unchanged.
On more than one occasion, I've had to go back to the original to start over, and that's when I've been thankful that it wasn't changed.
