I have to backup what keenart has said. When workinjg with multi-media apps and files, it is essential to de-fragment regularly. When large files open up, they do need contiguous sectors. I personally have used O & O software to defrag. This is jnot an advertisement, but it was worth it to me to purchases a third party degragmenter that allows for much faster and more effective defrags than the Windows Defrag program that comes with Win XP.
I do lots of multi-media encoding, editing, etc and running my defrag on a regular basic makes my performance more consistent.
I also would like to mention that if using Windows and an error Window came up for any reason, I find that it is a bad idea to run any type of multimedia/CD/DVD burning/ripping software at all. It is worth a restart.
While I haven't thought about it with Photoimpact, when I do any video editing or burning/ripping, I always re-boot first.
Unfortunately, there are some apps in XP or it is XP itself that sometimes does not clear itself when the processes are completed. That can slow things down as well as make processes that are CPU and RAM intensive fail. Re-booting fixes that.
It also might be a good idea to make sure that your drives are set for DMA as well as checking the size and allocation of your virtual RAM.
