All of a sudden tonight, my copy of Videostudio 9 would no longer start up.
After trying it again and even rebooting twice, it still would not start. I then turned off DEP (Data Execution Prevention, supported on select AMD and Intel processors), and Bingo!, it worked.
To change this setting for Videostudio, go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Performance Settings -> Data Execution Prevention -> Add...
Videostudio 9 won't start? Try this...

There is another interesting thing I found out yesterday while helping a friend.
He is learning to use VS7, it came with his new laptop. The DV camcorder he got, came with a USB connector and VS recognises the camera and captures video via the USB connection, alas at horrible quality. He asked me about it and I had a look at his settings etc. Turned out that the clips he captured via the USB connection were at 160 x 120 pixels at 14 fps. When I tried to change the capture settings for VS, the system crashed with the well known message "Windows has encountered a problem and needs to shut down..."
I used my firewire cable, because he did not have one, and connected the camcorder to the firewire port on his laptop. All went well. The camcorder was recognised straight away and the captured video was of as good a quality as one would expect. Changing capture settings did not cause the system to crash either. Go figure?
