RAW Formats supported

Post by reinhard »

Just upgraded. The list of RAW formats (according to File Open Dialog), are as follows:

*.raw;*.crw;*.cr2;*.bay;*.raf;*.dcr;*.mrw;*.nef;*.orf;*.pef;*.x3f;*.srf;*.erf;*.dng

Canon 350D RAW Files (.CR2) can be opened.

What's it look like? I could import them into PI 10 but got only garbled content.

Hi Reinhard,

My Canon 300D works, so you should be OK with .crw files.

Just be aware of the other bugs :(

I'm interested -what have you upgraded?

I have a Canon 350D and PI 10 does not recognise/read its RAW format files (there is in fact a seperate posting on this particular camera on this website).

RawShooter Essentials

Post by reinhard »

Apart from playing with RAW files a little while after having bought my Canon 350D camera, I have not really worked with RAW files. The upgrade to PI11, however, has sparked renewed interested in RAW files and I've started to look into it a bit more seriously.

My first impression, after looking at the RAW support in PI11 and looking at what seems a more "professional" tool for this job, RawShooter Essentials 2005, from pixmantec.com, I think PI11 provides just the bare basics in RAW support, i.e. the ability to open RAW files and adjust the basic parameters. However, it lacks the ease and fidelity of a specialist tool like RawShooter Essentials.

If you look at upgrading to PI11 for it's RAW support alone, then I'd say it's not worth it.

Reinhard

I upgraded primarily because of the RAW support. I love how PhotoExplorer 8.6 works with PI 11. The workflow is so much more simple than using a separate RAW converter like Raw Shooter Essentials. RSE is a great program but I had trouble with the image not matching how it looks in PI after conversion.

I love how PE 8.6 automatically transfers both my jpg and RAW pics from my memory card. The PI RAW conversion seems simple compared to RSE but in reality it has all the basic controls I wanted and the results are great.
