Error: Failed to Build a Preview Graph

Post by southernghost »

I have recently upgraded from MS6.5 to 7 (and then ULEAD releases 8, of course)...
I often need to capture video from stock files on tape or CD/DVD via the s-video input to my ATI All-In-Wonder X800 AGP card. With version 6.5, this was no problem. Now, all I get is an error, Failed to build a preview graph. This only happens with I try to capture video on either composit or s-video input. When I use my Digital Camcorder and capture video from the tape via Firewire, I have no problems. I have no problem capturing video with Windows Movie Maker, so I know there is no problem with the hardware - at lease nothing that prevents me from capturing video. I am not capturing from copy protected sources. Most of the work I do is to capture short segments for projection during worship at church. (It is much easier to have the videos as cues in my presentation application than running from a separate DVD). Once the video is captured, I have no problem with Video Editor. Any suggestions?

Try changing the capture format from DV to MPEG or AVI or one of the others. See if this clears the problem.

Already tried

I have tried all capture driver combos available. I have tried many of the compression schemes available. These do not have any affect.

As you have no problems with DV, feed your analogue AV into your camera and capture as a DV AVI. If this is OK, you may wish to consider a dedicated converter, like the Canopus ADVC-110. Working with DV is FAR easier than any analogue capture system, because you have no choice in the set-up.

Failure to capture

Post by southernghost »

It it not acceptable to go through another device. I did not spend several thousand dollars to build a high end computer and purchase software to have to go out and by another converter. I have direct s-video and composite input on my computer - I do not need another device to cause problems.

I have been a ULEAD product owner for over 10 years. I have several of their products. This is the first time that I have had a real problem. I enjoy thier products - great value. Yet, I am dissapointed in their response to this problem. That is why I have turned to the Web Board. I am a computer systems engineer, and, yes, I did build my own computer. It is one of MANY that I have built. I am using a dedicated SATA drive for all my capture. I have a AMD Athlon-64 - 3700+ CPU with 2 GB Ram. I have a total of 850GB disk space. I am using the ATI X800 256 MB All In Wonder AGP video card.

Please yourself! If one has problems that one cannot resolve, one generally finds ways round them, n'est-ce pas? If you try to use the inputs on your computer and they don't work, then that means the input system ain't working. You have two choices: find out why, if you have the time, or use a workaround (for which you already have all you need), if you want the results fast.

As you are such a great computer systems engineer, you don't need telling that the problem is either within your hardware, the drivers there for, your operating system and its associated bits'n'pieces or you are lacking the right codecs, as the Video Capture module works fine for DV.

Have you applied service pack 3? Maybe that will correct your problem.

Hope that helps.

I have an AIW X600 PCIe card. MSPro 7.x and 8.0 both work perfectly with it and analog sources.

I set it up to use the Ulead DirectShow capture plugin, set the source to Composite or S-Video in the AIW capture properties and off it goes.

It is working now

Yesterday, I downloaded the latest drivers for the ATI All In Wonder, uninstalled the current drivers, and updated. Today, I am having no problems.
