I have several videos artfully crafted in moviemaker, in high quality wmv files. Videostudio does not like that format and it takes a looong time to convert it. I can't seem to save files to avi in MM either, so what is my best way to use these videos inside VS7? Is there some software out there that will convert it to mpeg2 before entering vs?
Thanks
How to use a wmv file in videostudio?

What have you done when you tried saving to .avi format? I am surprised you cannot as I used to use MM for this purpose and it always worked. I quote from the MM help files: "File type. The type of file the movie file is saved as on your computer. Possible file types include Windows Media Video (WMV) files or Audio-Video Interleaved (AVI) files."
A work-around, though a tedious one, would be to export your MM project back to your DV camera (see MM Help). Then you could import it back into VS as a DV/AVI capture at exactly the same quality level at which it was exported to the camera in the first place. But of course both the export and re-capture would be in real time.

I don't know why MM2.1 blows up, but it is pretty complete when it happens. It happens when I "save to computer" and it asks what file type and I use DV-AVI format. It used to think about for a while before blowing, now it is prompt. I have papajohn at MM scratching his head too.
Your workaround is creative, but I gotta think there is another way. I got Roxio6 to accept my wmv files, but the output was below par. I hear that 6 has some problems that 7 does not have so I might demo 7 and see what it can do.
thanks for your input.

Have you tried saving your *.wmv files as "High Quality Video (NTSC)?"
It works in Movie Factory 3, but still takes a long time to convert/burn.
The last time I did this, I mixed some MM2.1 *.wmv created files with some video captured mpegs from my Hauppauge 250 card. Project was about 25 minutes in "viewing length." Started burning project about 10pm. Checked at 6:30am. Finished. Did a great job.
As near as I can tell, there are similarities in the MF3 and VS9 burning engines (Haven't tried it out in VS9 yet
). Might be worth a try.
