Split screen effect
Using a tripod, I have taken 2 videos of my son on either side of the couch. I would like to overlay them together to get an effect of him talking to himself.
I have tried to just overlay the video, with an opaque 50%, but that gives a ghost image.
I have tried resizing the video clip, but that squishes it, instead of only showing the right side of one and left side of the other.
Any easier ideas?
Eric

I'm afraid that isn't any more helpful. Maybe I didn't explain myself correctly.
I would like to have the LEFT HALF of one video, and the RIGHT half of the other video playing at the same time.
After reading the help as much as possible, I am convinced I need a MASK OVERLAY. I can create a 720x480 BMP half black and half white. How do I insert it into ULead to pick up as a Mask feature on my overlay track?

To do what you are asking is a slight variation on the method described by MikeGunter
http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=3298
You just need to do a bit more preperation.
Start with the right hand video. Place it onto the overlay track. Resize it full screen. Now drag it over to the left until the bit you want to be in the middle (in the finished product) is on the left edge. Now render this as a new file.
You can now start with a clean timeline. Place the left hand video on the main track. Now overlay your newly created clip, making it full screen and dragging it towards the right until you reach the point you want.

The way I understand it is, You have filmed your son sitting on a settee twice.
The first time he is sitting on the left of the settee.
The Second time he is sitting on the right of the settee.
You used a tripod and so both pictures hopefully were taken from exactly the same postition and hopefully taken from the front of the settee.
You are hoping to end up with a picture that looks as though you have a set of twins, one on each end of the settee.
I hope I have this correct. Having established that this is the case the method I described above WILL work. Perhaps I need to explain it again differently.
You need to merge together two video clips.
Clip 1 will be the left hand half of your screen containing your son when he is siting on the left.
Clip 2 will be the right hand half of your screen containing your son when he is sitting on the right.
You do not need to do anything with clip 1. that will remain as it is.
We need to chop clip 2 in half, we need to discard the left half and keep the right half.
We will then put this right hand half on top of Clip 1 so that it covers the right hand side of clip 1.
Start with a blank timeline.
Place the clip 2 on the overlay track and make it full screen.
Drag the clip over to the left until the centre of the clip is on the left edge of your screen - the right half of your screen will be black.
Render this.
Now start a fresh timeline.
Place clip 1 on the main video track.
Place new clip 2 on the overlay Track and make it full screen. currently it is covering clip 1 in its entirety.
Now drag new clip 2 towards the right, as you do so it reveals part of clip 1 underneath. Continue to drag until all of the black area of new clip 2 (the right hand side of new clip 2) has now been dragged off the screen.
Hey presto!! Job Done.

Here is my humble offer that I think will produce better and more controllable results to do a "split screen effect." I played around with it this morning and had breakfast with a guy who looked and dressed just like me! Enjoy!
1. Bring in your "left" video to the main video track.
2. Bring in your "right" video to the overlay track. Right-click your overlay video and select "Fit to Screen."
3. Now go to Video Filter and drag-n-drop the Cropping filter onto your overlay track.
4. Now select Customize Filter.
5. On the first key frame make the Width 50% and the Height 100%. You'll notice in the "Original" screen that there are some dashed lines showing the amount that has been cropped. You'll also notice a cross-hair in the middle. Click on the cross-hair and move the selection to the right side. You'll now notice that the Preview screen is half blacked out and the video only shows the right half.
6. Repeat the above step for the last key frame but don't click OK yet, there's one more step.
7. Now, click on the the Fill Color box and choose a crazy color that's not in your picture, like hot pink. This will become your chroma key.
8. Now click OK.
9. Next select Mask & Chroma key; Apply overlay options.
10. Select the eyedropper tool and click on your hot pink overlay color. Voila!
8. Now you can go back and adjust the crop size to suit your video. Just remember to always do it for the first and last key frames.
BONUS TIP: My overlay track, for some reason was a little brighter than the main track. I used the Brightness filter to darken it a little so the blend looks perfect now. If you do this however, you'll need to reselect your mask (chroma) color.
Have fun,
Ron

David,
IMHO, Chroma Key will work but it won't be as clean. It's very difficult to get rid of the chroma "glow". If the subject is sitting down, as I think elubin1234 wanted to do, I would assume that getting a good even chroma background would be difficult as well. With my method the effect, with a little tweaking as needed, will look seamless and very professional.
