Cannot Burn with UVS8 SE
This is plea for help. At wits end.
I have UVS8se and have been unable to burn to disc, or to file, or image. Process always continues through VOB, at end of which one of two error messages appear: either "Cannot Open File" (error 93006:1:0), or "Cannot Create File." (Also, in latest attempt, the error was followed by dreaded "..encountered problem" window when attempted to close burn, and UVS shut down.)
I've read through prior threads, including advice from Steven Wray and JC Hunter, to no avail (tho must still be doing something wrong).
Here are some system details:
XP Pro, sp2
P4, 2.4GHz (18X133)
512MB RAM
NTFS (both C: and N: drives)
C: drive -- 42G of 78G is free.
N: drive -- 95G of 115G is free.
N drive (external harddrive) is USB connected.
Optical drive: Atapi DVD-DD 2x16x4x16
Source / Capture info:
Source is Sony HandyCam with 8cm DVD
Have attempted capture in different ways, but have only been able to successfully capture by using Sony's Picture Package software to transfer to harddrive, and then used same PicPkg to convert audio to mpg. This MPG file then input to uvs8se for edit& burn.
Project Details:
Coming out of Picture Package, details are:
NTSC DVD
MPEG-2 Video, Upper Field (I know... expected Lower, but this is it)
24 bits, 720 x 480, 4:3
29.97fps
Variable bit rate (max 9100)
Audio: MPEG layer 2, 48KHz, 16 bit stereo
Bit Rate: 384 kbps
Once loaded into UVS, tried to keep all settings equal to above through to burn. Lone exception was that UVS would not give option for 9100 max bit rate; was limited to max of about 8400.
Even after following JCHunter's directions and settings as religiously as I could, still get same results every time.
I've defragged HD, even tho system stated it didn't need it. I've downloaded the uvs updates appropriate for 8se. At this point I have no clue what's happening.
Your help sincerely appreciated.

Are you sure that the "SE" version of VideoStudio is capable of burning DVDs?
I believe the SE versions are simplified forms of the software which don't offer the full spectrum of capabilities, most particularly the DVD burning.
Some versions are called "SE-DVD" and those DO include DVD burning.
I'd recommend upgrading to USV 9. You'll love it.

I don't think he would be able to get into the burn module in the totally crippled version -- it would simply not be there or greyed out. As it is, it appears that he gets to the multiplexing stage of the burn to disc when the program keels over (or at least that's how I interpret his reference to the VOB stage). So I think elubin's suggestion is the way to go.

I'd love to report on how the problem was solved; but as it turns out, I spoke way too soon. In fact, problem still persists.
I can confirm, however, that version I have is UVS8 SE-DVD, and it is supposed to burn DVD's. However, so far have only been able to burn VCD with it.
Thought it might be the DVD drive, but it did burn the VCD, and it's also burn DVD's using NERO (express2). So while it could probably use a firmware update, it looks like the issue remains with UVS software.
About the burn update... I downloaded all I saw for UVS8 (even tho some wouldn't install since I have only UVS8-SE), including burn update. Nothing's helped so far.
Any advice??
(If and when this finally works, I'll make sure solution appears in this thread.)

I was going to ask if you had Nero's InCD packet writing software or something similar installed, as that often takes over the burner and denies it to other programs. But I see you are using Nero Express which I don't think includes InCD.
Did you see yesterday's post by Torsten Hoff at http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=7604 It might be worth a try since everything else has failed...

Ken,
Thanks for the suggestion. Don't know anything about the "data execution" feature, but it's certainly worth a try. (I too am getting the program shut down box after the failed burn attempts.)
One way or another, it's got to be some incompatible setting... but I don't know enough to guess whether it's related to codecs, firmware, other software installed, or this.
Will report back on results.
Thks.

Checked DEP setting. Appears OK.
(In XP Pro, setting either on " for essential Windows programs and services only," or for all programs. Currently set for only the essential windows programs/svcs.)
Have corresponded with BenQ regarding firmware for DVD drive, since current firmware (G7H9) is very old (tho bought the drive recently). They've advised to update in order to address the problem.
Hope that's it.
I'll report back to this board after completing update of DVD firmware.
Thks.

Upgrading DVD drive firmware provided some nifty tools, but did nothing to solve current problem. Still getting "Cannot Open File" at conclusion of burn process.
Since drive does burn, but not with UVS8, it must be something with UVS... an incompatibility of some sort.
Perhaps I loaded software updates slightly out of order (would this do it?).
Perhaps other programs are somehow interfering?
(I have loaded on the computer several video & music packages that came with certain hardware. In addition to UVS8SE-DVD, sitting on computer is Nero Express, Roxio "Easy CD" [or something like that], Windows Movie Maker, Pinnacle [a limited version]. Could any of these be a problem?
Maybe (tho doubtful at this point) it could be hardware configuration? (DVD drive is IDE "slave," while CD drive is "master.")
Any experience / ideas that might help. Would really like to use UVS from start to finish. Though, at this point, I'd be almost equally happy for recommendations of how best to take it from UVS-edited mpg file to burning with another sftwr. Which best? Worth upgrading?
Would appreciate any advice or help!

Torsten Hoff will hopefully jump in here. But I think Roxio Easy CD could be the culprit. If it is the program I am thinking of, it does the same thing as Nero's InCD and effectively can take over the burning drive and deny it to other programs. But unlike InCD, it can apparently be disabled though still remaining installed. I don't know the program, so cannot help on the exact steps, but look at the general menu and see if there is a command to disable.

Ken,
ULead tech support pointed out same thing about Roxio. So I uninstalled, but still have the problem. Sill get the "Cannot Open File" followed by "need to exit program" when try to get out.
Trying to attack from another angle, I tried loading an mpg file into Movie Factory 3SE. When attempted burn, got through entire process and then received ....
"Source File has some problems! (5003)"
Followed by....
"Cannot open file (14252:1:0)"
So.... seems like problem could be another software incompatibility, OR some problem with file (tho have tried different files).
Are there any other known problem applications (like Roxio) that could be the cause? If necessary, I could post list of all suspect applications on my system.
Regarding the mpg file..... as noted before, the project properties are not identical with the burn settings.... at least in that the max bit rate of 9100 in the project must, at burn, be reduced to the max of 8234 (or thereabouts). Is this likely to be the problem?
What would you advise for "next step"?
Many thanks.

Can't think of much more I can say. I note you refer to John Hunter's advice, and am assuming you are referring to the Recommended Procedures at the top of this Board. But can you at least confirm here that you are capturing, editing and then go to Share > Create Video File > DVD (where you would have to use the lower 8000 bps bitrate which VS uses as its maximum setting). And only at this stage -- when you have produced a DVD-compatible mpeg-2 file at 8000 bps -- that you go Share > Create Disc > DVD which opens the burning module...
If you have indeed produced the DVD-compatible mpeg-2, you at least have the alternative of burning the DVD with Nero which you know works -- although I don't know what Nero Express gives you by way of menu creation. The full version of the Nero Ultra suite, however, has fairly good facilities for this (though not as good as Video Studio's IMHO). However, I have not yet used these facilities in the brand new Nero 7 suite which is being released as we speak and which may have even better menu and chapter creation capabilities.
