Slideshows: Problems with stills vs. videos & editing t

Post by BadgerChad »

Hello from a newbie to VS9...hoping someone can help. I've purused help files and the tutorials and either I have totally missed the obvious or just haven't caught on yet.

I'm designing a slideshow that has a mix of still shots and video (imported AVI). Some of the stills have titles overlayed on them using the title feature in VS9. Here's the issues I have.

1. Videos are only in the initial part of the show. Between the videos and the stills I have a blank screen with just title and audio.

2. I've been putting the stills in the overlay track as they don't start until later in the show. I don't know if this is the best place for them, but if I try to insert them into the video track (this might be wrong) they just default to go automatically after the last video, which is NOT where I need it in the timing sequence. Do I need to put in some type of blank placeholder in the video sequence?

3. By putting the stills in the overlay track field, when I want to insert a new image between two existing images, I cannot (I get the "Don't do this" circle and bar). Even right clicking and manually inserting just puts the new image at the end of the stills. (Does this have anything to do with ripple editing? I've tried it both ON and OFF.) To solve this I'm having to drag all the files to the right, put in what I want, and move everything back, and that just seems totally counter-intuitive.

4. Same issue with titles and audio, as far as not being able to insert new.

Basically, I'm pretty messed up. I've checked to see if there were default settings, but cannot seem to locate. Please forgive my ignorance, it's likely something quite obvious that this Rookie is overlooking.

Thanks......BC

hi,

i'm thinking you can just place your images on the video track as well. when you said "I've been putting the stills in the overlay track as they don't start until later in the show.", what do you mean? if you don't "overlay" your images over something on the video track, i suggest you put it in the video track. i

'm thinking the way you have your video set up is like

video -- blank screen with title/audio -- slideshow of images

is this right? if this is what i think you're doing then just put everything on the video track.

in the video track, if you insert a file inbetween clips, it will push the second clip to the right. i think this helps when you are doing your slideshows. however, for the other tracks ... it doesn't seem to push the second clip. i've tried this but doesn't seem to work. i get the "no parking" thing too.

your number 4 point, you mean you can't insert new titles and audio? you should insert them in the proper track on the timeline.

hope this helps you.

Hi,

What you are trying to do is really not too difficult, and you should read up on Ripple Editing. This is a technique enabled by clicking the small flowchart icon to the left of the timeline. For other tracks you wish to include into the effect, you would need to click the corresponding chain link icon on the left of each track to be included.

Basically Ripple Editing allows you to insert clips to the timeline and shunts everything along to the right of the insertion point. Inserting the clips in StoryBoard mode is the simplest practice ...unless say you want to insert a still half way through a section of video. In which case the still clip can be overlaid at the point and duration over which you want it to appear. When you insert a new clip in the timeline at a point where there is a transition... Ulead will remove the transition, so you may have to re-instate it after you have positioned your new clip.

The overlay track is not the best place to position your still images if they are to be played contiguously with the video clips.. Place them in the timeline, while in StoryBoard mode.. The default duration is 6 secs, but you can adjust this to whatever you want... Stills also seem to look better with a short 1-2 sec cross-fade between each image.. If you wish to overlay images or stills onto a video track in the primary timeline, (Picture in Picture) then do position them in the overlay track at the positions you want... You can size the image box and position it in the frame while you are doing it.. Note.. The faint line rectangular marquee shown while you are doing this, is the Safe Zone. Anything overlaid (including titles) positioned or extending outside the Safe Zone... may be cut off when viewing on a TV. Just something to bear in mind..

There should be no blank ranges of video track... The primary timeline should be occupied with media clips for its whole duration.

If you want to overlay titles over a blank screen... insert a colour clip and adjust the length of the clip to support the overlaid title duration and effects...

Be careful if you want to remove a clip while Ripple editing is enabled, because this encourages Ulead VS to also remove other clips that are linked. Such as Titles, Overlays and Audio clips... You may therefore wish to click the chain link icon to disable the link when removing the unwanted clip.. So be prepared to make some adjustment in these subsidiary tracks later.

These notes are just basics.. to hopefully help you with building your video creation... There is much more that you can do once you get more comfortable with Ulead VS Video Assemble and Editing tools..

Best Wishes
George

Squanix and GeorgeBW thanks....

I think my problem lies in the fact that I was putting just the video clips in the video portion, in "TIMELINE" view, which is where I've done most of m editing (coming from Windows MovieMaker, the comfort level was there).

My issues then, seem to revolve around not having that video track full, and perhaps not using "Storyboard" view?

GeorgeBW, you referenced inserting a color clip to hold the positioning in the video track. Could you advise how one does that?

Also regarding ripple editing, I attempted this, but it wouldn't let me...guessing that it was possibly related to the fact that I was doing this on the overlay track, with no accompanying video track above it?

Thanks again for the help, and if anyone else has ideas, please chime in. Again Squanix and GeorgeBW thanks!!

Colour clips can de found in the Library the panel to the right of the preview screen.
Drag and drop the colour clip to the timeline, the clip will act simular to an image clip. You can select a duration top left, or you can click the clip to highlight then drag the yellow trim-bars to extend/reduce the length.

Add a transition to the start and end of the colour clip.
