VS9 & Sony Micromv capturing

Post by dt9447 »

I have downloaded my free trial of VS9, however the program does not recognise or give me the option to select my micromv as the source. I note from the help section that there is a conflict between Sony and other capture cards in Windows ME, but I am running Windows XP.

Can any one help me resolve this or is it just that I am unable to use this product to capture video from my Sony micromv camera via my firewire port?

I don't think you'll be able to get MicroMV capture to work -- you'd probably be the first one to do so. Ulead shouldn't even claim MicroMV support for it, because I have yet to hear of anyone having any luck with the current version of Videostudio.

If you want to try it anyway, make sure you go to Tools -> Change Capture Plugin, and select the MicroMV plugin.

MMV Capture Alternative

Post by Ustad »

No luck here, either, capturing from SONY MMV cameras to any ULEAD products, but there is an alternative. First, use SONY MovieShaker to capture the MMV files to your HDD. Then Google the nifty utility MMV2MPG and use it to convert your MMV files (which are transport stream MPEG-2) to MPG (program stream MPEG-2). It just rewrites the headers and does not re-encode, so you don't lose any quality. Then insert the new MPGs into VS9, or any editor that accepts MPEG files, and edit. Hope this helps.

I have previously read (but don't know if this is still true) that MovieShaker has two problems: one being that it cannot capture files larger than 2GB, and the other that the first thing in the files it creates is a still image for displaying a thumbnail within the program.

You therefore cannot capture long videos with MovieShaker, and other programs could have trouble opening files created by MovieShaker.

Just in case anyone is following this thread. Movieshaker that came with my camera will capture large files. It may depend on the file system that is in use. I am using WinXP SP2 with NTFS.

I was hoping to use VS9 and move onwards from Movieshaker, but it doesn't look as though Ulead is able to support MicroMV anymore - just like Sony! Maaybe they were PO'd that Sony cancelled the format after they spent time and effort to provide some support before

As an experiment I downloaded MediaStudio 8 Trial. The capture program with that suite seems to be able to handle my MicroMV camera just fine. I was hoping that if it did, the VideoStudio 9 problem (Unable to build a Capture Graph) would go away - but it didn't.

So if you're keen and have a suitable budget, try MediaStudio.
You can try before you buy.
