I spent the better part of today troubleshooting my PI XL (and PI 6) crashing problem. Tonight it seems to be working as normal again.
I went through everything from doing various System Restores to searching the internet for clues regarding the error messages I received after the PI crashes. Got me nowhere. Nothing worked until I did the following...
- I UN-installed PI 6 (after turning off ALL background programs I could - including ZoneAlarm and McAfee)
- Then UN-installed PI XL
- Then UN-installed EVERY program that had the Ulead name on it (photo album etc.)
- Then I cleared all the TEMP files I could possibly find
- I considered editing the Registry to manually clear out all references to any Ulead product, but chickened out and didn't want to spend the time doing it anyway
- I then found my very first Photo Impact CD (version 4.2) and installed it. NOTE: I did that because my PI 6 CD was an upgrade that required a previous install of an older version
- Then reinstalled PI 6
- Then reinstalled PI XL (also an upgrade CD)
Now, everything is working like it always used to - no crashing! I hope it lasts. Worries me a bit that other folks have reported the re-installs work for a time then go wacky after a while.
I had already re-installed PI XL several days ago as you can see from my first post, but I had not backtracked with previous Ulead product uninstalls/reinstalls as far as I did today. I'll let you know if PI starts misbehaving again. Otherwise, I think the "blasted" thing is fixed!
