I guess it is because you can't open it. Sorry about the bad joke.
Where did your avi file come from? avi and avi and another avi can actually be three different things alltogether. VS should not, and usually doesn't, have any problem with a DV avi file captured from your digital camcorder.
What are the properties of your clip?

Oh, ooohh, that I didn't expect
If you can't open the sample file from ULEAD??? This calls for a complete and utter uninstall of VS, delete the temp files, clear the registry of anything VideoStudio, re-boot your system and do a fresh install.
The file properties you can find by right clicking on the actual file and clicking 'Properties'

The inability to open AVI files is often caused by a missing or damaged codec. Before you uninstall UVS and clean out the registry, make sure that you have the Indeo Codec V5.10 installed -- this is the codec used by all of the Ulead sample AVI files. The codec comes with Videostudio, but you may have skipped the installation for it.

Same problem
I got the same message after I upgraded fron UVS-7 to UVS-9 if I try to import avi files, or if I try see the included video samples. I installed the codec once, but after I installed the extra content packs I got thhat message again.
I have no problems using Nero Vision Express (6.6) for the same files, I can encode them and burn to CD.
