Choppy Video

Post by bskousen »

I am using the trial version of MSP 8.0. I am a registered user of 7.3.
Anyway, I have edited a two plus hour video with 2.0 ac3 audio. I couldn't use smartrender because its highest bit rate was 9800 and MSP will only go up to 9600 I believe. I have found that anytime I edit an existed video and do NOT use smartrender, the video is choppy, but the audio is fine. Smartrender, which doesn't change the original video, doesn't make it choppy. What gives? I have noticed this with 7.3 too. It doesn't make sense to me. These are DVD compliant video files that were multiplexed using TMPGEnc because MSP doesn't keep the audio synced with the video if I insert the elementary streams (at least it doesn't in 7.3). Any suggestions? Has anybody had a similar problem? How can I force MSP to smartrender?

It only goes to 9600 kbps because 9800 kbps is for audio + video + subpicture. The DVD project/export settings are just the video bitrate.

First of all why are you using such high bitrates? Most players have problems playing DVD-recordable media at more than 7000-7500 kbps, depensing on the media and the deck. Some can't even do 7000.

I rarely use compressed audio data on the timeline. Bad MoJo.

The problem was discribed nicely by Devil in another post, but I'll give it a go. Basically the audio "frames" used by compressed audio formats more often than not do not properly match the interval used for video frames.

LPCM/uncompressed WAV audio don't suffer this problem. When they're fed through the MPEG encoder they get properly muxed (multiplexed) to the video and that's that.

I don't WANT to use such high bit rates, but the original video file shows that when I click "information." I don't want to convert the audio file because it is already a 5.1 ac3 file. Why would I want to downgrade it? My question is the choppy video will occur whether I render at 9800 or 4000. It has nothing to do with my hardware either. I've got plenty of memory and a 3 ghz p-4.

Ok, ok.....didn't even mention hardware :)

I'd keep smartrender off given that the DVD project settings cannot be set to match your sources.

One old trick used in many editing programs when syncy issues arise is to cut the clips every 2-5 mintues in order to "reset" the synch "clock". In MSPro use the the U key to cut them at the current timeline slider position.

Hey Terry, I guess you have read one post too many as well  bskausen doesn't have a sync problem, his video is choppy, as he/she calls it.

That would sound like a field order reversal, wouldn't you agree?

The very high bit rate is an overkill also. Could that be the reason for choppy replay from a DVD deck?

HO

Well, he does (read his first post). But he also contradicts himself (AC-3 2.0 in his first post and 5.1 in his second one).

I don't have a clue as to the cause of his problems, but my first guess would be the bitrate. Even if his player accepts >7000 kbit/s, there is no guarantee his burner or media will. My first recommendation would therefore be to make a trial at video 6000 kbit/s CBR and audio AC-3 2.0 at 192 kbit/s. If this works OK, then he is on the path to sorting out his problems.

Oh, BTW, it is also a good idea to do the burning at ½ or even ¼ the max speed the media understands and to use DVD±R of the type the player likes best (e.g., Philips prefers DVD+R while Pioneer is in love with DVD-R)

OK, I said ac3 2.0 and 5.1 because this choppy video occurs on both when smartrender is turned off. As I said before, I tested both at 9600 and 4200 bit rates, but the end result was the same. Yes, I have had sync issues with larger files, but I have pretty much resolved those issues. The cutting up the video into smaller sizes IS an excellent idea. I also thought of the field order being reversed, but I don't think that's the problem. I may experiment with that today, however.
