DWS can't correctly report needed disc size

Post by Mipmap »

So far now I've had to burn to image several times because DWS is telling me my project will be a lot smaller than it actually is. I'll be using 4.7gb discs, and the project on my first try was reported as 4.6gb. However once I load this into several burning programs they will all report that my blank disc doesn't have enough space for my to write to it.

Now I've tried turning down the bitrate a tiny bit at a time and it keeps ending up too large. My latest try had DWS reporting the size as 4.4gb, which should have given me around 300mb of extra space on the disc. Yet I get a disc image that when burned will want more than what a 4.7gb disc wants.

I believe most of the problem is the fact that storage companys, like hard drive manufacturers are selling the discs marked as 4.7gb when its actually 4,480mb. If this is the case, it seems like it should have been a very obvious and basic idea that DWS, report the project size in a way that is measured for the actual size of the media and not the misleading fake size printed on the box.

It would also be nice if the file size was reported exactly in MB rather than the fake GB its using now.

Take a look at this.

I've been using DVDshrink (Free!!!). I set DVD Workshop to the highest quality, and DVDshrink will re-code the authored DVD files, shrinking them just-enough to fit. I'm sure that re-coding degrades the video, but to me it wasn't noticable. (My source is VHS, so it's low definition to begin with!)
