Add Texture

Post by nicolasr »

Hi,
I'm quite new to PI and have the following question:

I want to create a 3D-style path object and apply a texture to it
that I created. I have created the texture as a 4x4 24-bit Bitmap.

The problem: the material dialog lets me only
select PIs predefined textures.

Any ideas how to do this?

thanks
Nicolas

It cannot be the purpose of this board to teach newcomers the finer aspects of using this program. For starters, we are not professionally involved with this and use our spare time to help others.

To get a proper grounding in all the tools and procedures of PI, please take the free beginners workshop offered here http://www.pircnet.com/ or try one of the related tutorials.

That was not a very good answer to a quite reasonable question!
I'm not a new user of Photo Impact and have just searched the help files of the program and there is NO explanation of how to add a new texture to the fills.

The ULEAD "user to user" board should be just the place to go to ask a question. Most likely someone who has used that portion of the program frequently can answer without any effort - whereas sending a new user off to look it up in another area is a waste of everyone's time.

I am using PI10, in the Help files you are looking for the Materials dialog box.

Create your Path Object.
Select 3D Mode.
Select the Materials Icon to call the Materials dialog box.
Select the Tab named Color/Texture.
Check item named Texture.
Below Texture, check File.
Click on File to load the texture you want to impose on the Path Object.

Hi,

Thank you very much for the help.
What I was actually trying to do was to add a different texture to the already installed ones.
I didn't do it the right way, I'm sure, but I got it working the way I wanted it to.

The thing is, there are so many different options within Photo Impact that it's hard to remember them if you don't use them frequently.
That's what I meant about the value of these boards. You might use something all the time and not have to even think about how to do it, while my often used tools might be ones you hardly ever use.

To send someone who asks a simple question off to look through a tutorial about the whole program sounds like a very "microsofty" thing to do!

Yes, I know, I have used Ulead since before 3, and I still find something new everyday.

It sounds like what you might need is the Task feature of the Quick Command Panel. There are two tabs on the Panel, one named History and the second named Task.
Toggle Ctrl plus F2 to view or hide the panel.

The Task command allows you to record actions, similar to Photoshop and save them for later reuse. They are also like Scripts. You can find a lot in the Help file. Once you learn how to use this feature, your are hooked. I save many hours using the Task commands to do my work for me. Check the Task feature out.

In fairness to Heinz-oz who spends a lot of his valuable time here helping others you did change your goalposts!
Hi,
I'm quite new to PI and have the following question:
and then in your next post

OOPS sjj1805! You are quoting TWO DIFFERENT people.
nicolasr posted that he/she was a new user.

I, tdew posted that I was not a new user. I consider the help file within the program to be horrible, but I did check that first in order to refresh my memory of how to do what I wanted to. My annoyed response came after I had done a search of the forum to see if my question had already been asked because I didn't want to start a repetitious thread.
At that point, to discover that the original poster had been sent away was too much for me.

I appreciate the efforts of all who answer questions for others on the boards and I'm sorry that wasn't expressed.

Yep Steve messed up  darn it, and I thought he was flawless...

However In fairness to Heinz and Steve, that the majority of the people that come to the forums have a problem with a program working. That has been the basis of this forum, not to say that it should be.

So what Steve has linked to in another post, and what Admin has posted is the invitation for anyone to write tutorials. If you have one that catches Admin's eye then they would reward that...

Fatherly Advise!

I believe if anyone REALLY reads the post by Nicolas, they had a legitimate problem related to the use of PI and needed to know how to resolve it. Opening a file to add to an object as a texture does not require a tutorial.

One correct answer would have resolved the issue, that no one would now be talking about.

There are several ways to add textures. One of the easiest is..

1. Open an image and create an object... a circle or whatever, doesn't matter.
2. On the menu, select Effect\Fills and Textures\Texture Filter. This will bring up a screen with some images on the bottom row. Click on the second one from the left (Embossed).

3. On that same menu, in the upper right corner, there's a sample texture. Click on the down arrow next to the texture and select Add Texture. Browse your hard drive to find your texture. Now you can use it whenever you like.

If you want to try a different method, try this tutorial:
http://wwell.net/tutorials/pi12/stainedglasstiles/
The first part shows how to make a stained glass tile. Since you already have your tile (texture)created, go to the second part of the tutorial where it says Add Tiles to the Easy Palette and follow the tutorial.
