converting file problems

HI, I just gotthis Musicfactory 3.5 for Christmas, and am haivng a minor problem with it. I'm trying to convert and burn an .avi file. The .avi file is 632 MB, but when I choose it to make the dvd, it suddenely becomes 5.88G, so it won't fit onto a DVD. I wasn't aware that a conversion expands the files so much. is there any wayt o change setitngs to avoide this? I have a lot of files I wanted to use that are all under 1G, but if they expand during conversion, I'm not going to be able to use that much!
any siggestions?

Your Avi-file in question is probably a Div-X mpeg4 file. Change project-settings to a lower video bitrate for example 6000 VBR
