How do I change the clip sequence?

Post by Cardwell »

I'm a new user of DVD MF 4, very experienced with computers but I had NO IDEA how much there is to learn about video and burning dvd's.

I have a lot of old VHS tapes with many video clips on each and I want to burn them to dvd. I am capturing the tapes all right and multi-trimming them, but I would like to change the SEQUENCE of the clips. For example, I want to trim something out of the middle and move it to the beginning. Can I do that within MF or do I have to go back and do separate captures of each clip on the VHS tape, e. g., fast forward to the middle and capture that clip first, then rewind to the beginning and capture that next and so forth?

I've searched the forums and the manual and can't find any reference to this, so it's probably obvious to everyone but me. Thanks in advance for your help!

On the Add Media screen, after you have your clip in the timeline, position the Jog bar cursor to the position at which you want to split the video, then use the scissors button to the right of the Jog bar to split the video clip.

You will then have separate clips shown in the timeline. The order of these can be altered by simly clicking and dragging them to the required position. You may also delete unwanted clips.

Hope that helps.

Thanks a lot, JCC. That is exactly what I want. This is going to save me a lot of hours. I had noticed that scissors icon and I searched the manual and the Help Index to try to find what it was for. I thought it was related to multi-trim, since I couldn't find anything about it.

As a matter of interest (I haven't tried this yet) Can you then rejoin the clips together

Sorry

Sorry I should have said that when I have a number of clips in the bottom section the 'Join/Seperate video' button is greyed out

Yes, you can join the clips together. In this case, I "scissored" my video into 10 separate clips. Two segments were junk, so I selected them and clicked the "x" at the left to delete them. Then I completely changed the order of the clips by dragging them one by one into the sequence I wanted.

For this project, I had two different subject areas. So I selected the first 4 clips and told it to Join them, then selected the second group of 4 clips and told it to Join them. Now I had two clips. Incidentally, it created a chapter for each of the original clips, so each of the two clips had 4 chapters. I was then able to add more chapters and delete one of the chapters it had created.

I really thought this process was MUCH easier and more flexible than the F3/F4 Trim process. I think I will use it all the time now, even when I don't have to change the sequence of the clips.

I answered your first message before I saw the second message. Yes, I was also puzzled that the Join/Separate was always grayed out, but it turns out that it is ONLY an option if you have used the scissors to separate clips. In the example I gave, after I broke one clip into 10, then joined 4 of them together in a different sequence, I realized I had made a mistake. The Join/Separate option was now available, so I separated the joined clip back into 4 separate clips. I then moved things around some more and joined them back together. Works great!

It is a bit simpler than that. The Join icon is only greyed out because you have not got multiple clips selected (CTRL + click subsequent clips).

Once more than one is selected Join is then available. Makes sense when you think about it.

resolution lost

It appears if you join 2 clips together it loses resolution.

I hope you're wrong about that. The quality of my video was pretty poor to start with, so I didn't notice. Has anyone else noticed that?

I captured video clips from a HI8 camcorder that was set at best video capturing quality. Every times I cut a clip and play a rejoined clip I see some lost of resolution on the software comparing to the original clip. I have not tried burn onto a DVD to see it on a TV.
