help with audio plus msp8 configuration

Post by tomthum »

Hi all a couple of questions to the experts on msp8

1. Im in pal land so I use 720 x 576 settings
should I capture in dv type 2 or type 1 IN MSP8

also i just got a knew canopus acdv110 analogue and dv converter box
Im having a problem trying to capture audio with msp8

I have adobe prem pro and tried the canopus box out
in this program
it works fine i.e. captures video audio straight from TV picture back out to monitor etc etc

But when i start msp8 and go to the capture window (Im capturing straight of the T.V. FOR A TRIAL ) it captures video no audio
Although I can hear the audio during capture

Let me say first i had to change the capture driver from vfw
to ulead direct show ( only in msp8 )

The settings in the video capture window are GREYED out
the settings for the capture device says( msdv unknowncapture device)

should msp8 be able to capture analogue with the canopus converter etc

I also uninstalled msp8 and reinstall still the same
I dont use onboard sound i have a soundblaster card in pc

I dont understand why it works fine in Prem Pro and not in msp8
it has crashed a few times after the capture

My set up is
ASSUS MOBO P4P800 DELUX
3.2Mhz prescott processor
2 GIG RAM
80 GIG/ C /DRIVE 120 GIG/ D/ DRIVE 250GIG/EXTERNAL/DRIVE/

Any help Appreciated Thanks in advance

The difference between DV type 1 and 2 is that type one has the audio embedded and type 2 has the audio stream separate from the video. You are more likely to get sync problems with type 2.

The soundblaster cards are not known for very efficient use of system resources either.

If you have a DV camcorder you are much better off capturing in DV avi format via a firewire connection.

Since you got Adobe Premiere Pro and it works for you why do you want to capture in MSP? That any program prefers to use its own capture driver is hardly surprising, is it?

Iuse an ADVC-100, which is essentially the same. I suggest you try DV type 1 (it gives much better locking of sound to video). I have no problem. Also make sure your IEEE-1394 card is set to MS-1394 and check that Options shows 'unknown device' or words to that effect. It is normal that, for DV "capture", the options are greyed out because you are not capturing, you are simply saving the datastream directly to HDD. You therefore cannot have any control other than what you are offered.

Devil could u please explain
I thought if i have a tv and I start capture it would capture that program on the tv
I Thought that was capturing video AND NOT A DATA STREAM,
What im saying is their is no sound on the capture.

I go to video capture and up pops the capture window I press record it records the tv
Or captures it but no sound.

although i have Prem Pro and i bought ulead I would still like it to capture video and sound etc etc after all i paid £200 approx for the program.

Any way thanks for the help i will go over all my settings again
If i link my canon xm2 to the advc110 i still dont get audio in msp8
but i do in prem pro why?

Thanks again for your help

Sorry, cardinal error. You are NOT capturing video with DV, you are transferring data which is captured in the camera (or converter) in the form of a data stream. This is why DV is so efficient, because you can change nothing other than where you transfer the sound to (DV type 1 embedded into the video stream, DV type 2 in a separate sub-file). That is why I recommend DV type 1: you cannot lose it! Normally, you shouldn't be able to lose type 2, either, but it is easier to lose synch on long files.

OK let's start some diagnosis.

When you say there is no sound, what exactly do you mean? In what are you viewing? What happens when you try to play your AVI file in WMP? What happens when you try to put it on the VE editor main timeline? Assuming your project settings are matched to whichever DV you are using, as they should be (including video+audio), do you see both a green and a yellow line at the top of the timeline? If you put the video in V1, is there anything in A1? When you scrub or preview the timeline, do you hear anything?

If you answer these questions, we may be able to get a better picture.

I'm not sure how you can "lose" the audio with a DV Type-2 file -- the audio stream is still contained in the one captured video/audio file
