The machine I was trying to install to on Friday is my machine at the office, and was installing for test purposes, I have no idea of the firewall settings, totally out of my control.
At home, where I actually use the software, I have two machines, one connected via dial-up, and the other, my video editor, sharing the connection via a home/office network. I was able to install and activate on both quite easily, and as it currently stands, would be able to use MSP on both machines concurrently. As discussed earlier, is this legal? Not sure, but it works.
The only thing that for me remains to be seen, is what will happen at next format - something I do fairly often - I always say there is no better registry cleaning utility than FDISK!!
Bottom line - I am up and running, without to much pain, so I'm happy.

Greg
FDISK is wonderful - but what is even better is a complete snapshot of your harddrive as it exists NOW!
Have a look at "Image for Windows" (http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/imagew.html) it will allow you to take a "copy" of your harddrive at exactly the point you like it and rather than use FDISK just use Image for Windows to restore from the DVD(s) you created - saves a hell of a lot of time and in this case it will save a re-activation! I use it all the time to with my computer and I don't have to "re-activate" XP everytime - because the image caught everything!
Image for Windows is shareware, so you can even try before you buy
Peter
P.S. Always, always verify the integrity of a backup by loading the image back from the discs - my first "imaging" program was Drive Image (which is what the latest Norton Ghost is based upon - and that is why I don't recommend it!) and I discovered the "hard way" when I went to recover by harddrive image that the original backup hadn't worked!

activation codes
thinking this might too late already or you guys might know the answers to your questions or you guys switched to adobe but i heard that if you buy the BOX VERSION of MSP 8, you DO NOT need an activation code.
i don't know if this helps or not the people whose dedicated video machines doesn't have an internet connection.

This information or similar should be posted soon on the Ulead pagesi heard that if you buy the BOX VERSION of MSP 8, you DO NOT need an activation code.
Ulead Software and Activation Codes
Some of our products need you to enter an activation code before you can use the software. You need to be connected to the Internet for you to be able to enter the activation code. Please read the descriptions below to know which versions of our software require an activation code:
Retail Box
The program is on a disc. It does not require an activation code.
Online ESD
Purchased and downloaded the program from the Ulead online store. After completing the transaction, you will receive an e-mail from Ulead with one or more URL links to download additional content, plus an activation code for activating the program. You will be able to download all contents that the Retail Box has.
Trial
Downloaded from the Ulead Website but without additional content and activation code. In the trial program, click Buy to purchase the program online. After you complete the transaction, you will receive an e-mail with a URL telling you where to download additional content and the activation code. You do not need to download the program again.
Codec PowerPack
Some products have additional Codec PowerPacks that can expand codec support for a particular Ulead software. Similar to the online ESD version, you will receive an e-mail with a download URL and activation code after you complete the transaction
Re: activation codes
What was your source? As you word it, it sounds like an unsubstantiated rumour.squanix wrote:thinking this might too late already or you guys might know the answers to your questions or you guys switched to adobe but i heard that if you buy the BOX VERSION of MSP 8, you DO NOT need an activation code.

I can confirm that the activation code was included in the e-mail along with the download link. Yes, you need the internet to download the program, but not to do the actual activation. Obviously, if someone is purchasing the download version of the software then they have access to the internet. That doesn't mean they have to install the software on the computer that was used to download it.

Heinz,
"Activation" via the internet is a bit of a misnomer. After installation of the TBYB, you select activate, and enter the code supplied. The application then attempts to "Validate" this activation code via a net connection. What this validation does, I am not sure, but both my video pc and the other general pc required this validation process. To see what actually happens, one would need to do a before and after snapshot of the Ulead folder as well as the registry, and maybe that could be manually replicated on another machine, may get to do some investigation tonight.
However, as Devil and John mentioned, the box version seems to not require this - if the cd on demand is also like this, ie no activation required, I for one don't really have a problem, and I think your reluctance would also be addressed. I, like you, am a big fan of Ulead products, if this works for you, go for it, you won't be dissappointed.
Regards,
Greg

What I wrote above IS official and was sent to all the beta testers to allow them to inform the public pending the publication of their web info on the subject, which should be very shortly, so we are told.phd wrote:I feel a bit more comfortable hearing about the retail box not requiring it as that is always my purchase preference.
It would be good to have confirmation of that with an official post by Ulead on this thread as well. Its very easy to play musical web pages.
Ulead are aware they made a mistake by not making things clear from the start and apologise for this.
