I think the point people have been making through this thread is that after the initial activation, does the software "unwrap" so that any future installations - say after reformatting your hard drive, require activating again. After I had activated my software I was then able to see the registration number in the "help - about" box.
The point was, would the serial number now be sufficient without activating it for a second time? some posts on this thread mention that they would prefer to 'move' their copy of MSP8 to another machine which has no internet connection.
My tests have shown that this is not possible with the downloaded version - an internet connection and re-activation are necessary. It is likely that this will not be necessary for a boxed version.

sjj1805 got it right, it is not a matter on agreeing or not with activation but a matter of transparency.
I come back to Adobe again, their site have very extensive information about their activation process, how it works (by Internet or over the phone), the number of times you can activate it, what happens if you reformat your HDD, how you can transfer the license to another computer, the information that the algorithm captures and encondes in the key to send them, and more... (even Microsoft spent a lot of effort to explain everything about activation when they introduced it).
It is just this I would like to be there in a clear way.
And I couldn't see any warning by the time I bought the download because I'm waiting for the boxed version and as johnpr98 recognizes the warning is not there. For the others I must confess I didn't recall seeing it but that is meaningless because it could be ther or not.
I don't contest I could be there either, but even in red such small letters doesn't seem to me to be the clearest way to signal a change in policy like this one.
Regards

You can activate it at whatever computer you download it with. Then uninstall it and bring the download to the one you use as an editing machine.johnpr98 wrote:First time I've studied the MSP8 download page

The * is a new addition. probably as a result of this thread and others on the other forums. When the topic first came up I looked around and there weren't there.
Not very straight-forward. Would be nice to see a post of "Oops, sorry guys, we srewed up."
Still, if I wanted product activation, I could upgrade to Premiere Pro which stated their policy up front originally and I could buy for $50 less ($199)!

George,
The machine I was trying to install to on Friday is my machine at the office, and was installing for test purposes, I have no idea of the firewall settings, totally out of my control.
At home, where I actually use the software, I have two machines, one connected via dial-up, and the other, my video editor, sharing the connection via a home/office network. I was able to install and activate on both quite easily, and as it currently stands, would be able to use MSP on both machines concurrently. As discussed earlier, is this legal? Not sure, but it works.
The only thing that for me remains to be seen, is what will happen at next format - something I do fairly often - I always say there is no better registry cleaning utility than FDISK!!
Bottom line - I am up and running, without to much pain, so I'm happy.
Regards,
Greg

Hey Greg,
happy to see that you are up and running with it. That was not the subject of my post though. I know that I will get it working fine once the activation via the internet is done. That's where I personally, as well as some others, have a problem.
As we all know, ULEAD works best if there are as little as possible background programs running. Firewalls and virus scanners are the cause of many a problem installation out there. That is even acknowledged by tech support, I think.
How on earth does ULEAD now expect us to hook up our dedicated video machines to the internet for the sake of an internet based activation routine? I for one will not have it. If they insist on my machine being connected to the internet while I install the upgrade to MSP 8, they can stick it where it fits. There are other ways of insuring the software is not pirated. Like many others, I rebuilt my machine several times a year, if only to clear out the registry. Do they expect me to go through a routine like that every time I have to re-install the program?
On the other hand, Microsoft have gone to extremes with their activation of XP. Did it stop anyone from running a piratetd copy, I don't think so. All it does is to make it a troublesome process for honest users like myself. If ever I decide to get a new motherboard and SATA HDD's for my system I may find that MS expects me to throw another couple of hundred dollars their way because I exceeded their idea of reasonable re-builts.
I don't need that kind of crap from ULEAD as well. I have been a loyal ULEAD user over the years, inspite of numerous problems (all fixed in the end), but they are testing my patience now.

Greg is bringing a new side to the story.
As I posted before, is not relevant to discuss the note in the site or if it was there or not.
By Greg's words it seems that downloaded version need validation and it also seems more something like when you subscribe to a forum that sends you an e-mail with a password that you need to validate through a link in the message.~
But is it really like that? Is it just for the downloaded version?
All my other questions continue on, obviously.
At first I referred Nikon Capture that calls validation to the input of the serial key in boxed versions, is it also Ulead's case?
Clarification would be great.

Someone also stated that there was some interaction, or the attempt of interaction, with the ULEAD server during the installation process. In his case it failed because of some firewall settings.
How much more clarification do you need? It sucks!

Today I have posted my disagreement with the aparent "activation" routine on the ULEAD feed back page here http://www.ulead.com/msp/feedback.htm and urge everyone to do the same.
I have also asked the ULEAD support team to clarify what the actual "activation" routine consists off.

Heinz,
Yes I agree, and I realise it wasn't really your original question was just relating my experience, firstly unable to connect at the office, (I assume because of the firewall), and secondly the ease at home. I also realise that you dont connect your video pc to the internet, me neither normally, in fact my modem is permanantly off, unless I connect, do what I need and disconnect.
Antonio, check my earlier post re the activation process.
That said, I am not really sure what they are trying to achieve, as I loaded and activated on both machines, and could happily have passed on the activation code to all and sundry, so reducing piracy? I don't really think so.
Regards,
Greg

Wow... it has been interesting to follow this thread. I think I'll wait a while before upgrading... could not afford not being able to reinstall if need be.
BTW, it was said here that most upper echelon software use activation codes, for instance Adobe Premiere Pro. That is of course true, but there activation is also possible by phone, which is not the case with Ulead. Activattion ONLY by Internet access is, it seems to me, the real problem here, not the activation code as such.

I really read your post and it was the reason why I enter ithis thread again.

Sorry if I was inconevient to the point to make you feel it sucks, it wasn't the intention.
Just thought this web board was intended for us to express our concerns and by no means I was trying to fight Ulead.
But you are right - it is there, internet is required to activate the downloaded version - when you say "How much more clarification do you need? "
To me it is cristal clear, besides I'm waiting for the boxed version to make a decision.
To me the tree is focus crisp, besides I was trying to see not just the tree but also a bit more of the bush/forest. But I have to conceed, if I can see the tree why will I also want to see the bush? Stupid, isn't it?
So for the sake of others users peace of mind, and as it seems to be inconvenient and curiosity seems to suck, I will bother you no more.
All the best

you got me all wrong. My remark "It sucks" was not aimed at you at all. I just interpreted your post in such a way as if you were waiting for more clarification. That's why I asked "How much more clarification do you need?"
In the past I was one of the few that jumped to ULEAD's defence whenever someone blamed the software for a problem that most likely had more to do with their hardware/software mix than the program. Come to think of it, I'm likely to continue that attitude because I think the ULEAD programs are great value for money and don't need to fear comparison with other programs out there. It's just this "activation" issue that got me all worked up.
It took me a long time to get my system humming the way it is now. Gradually I removed all unnecessary programs, even word processing etc. off my video editing machine. All I do on it now is working with images in PI XL and PI 10 and video in MSP 7.3. I will not jeopardize this set up by, even temporarily, installing a network card, modem etc.
If, however, it is possible to install and activate a copy of the software on one machine and later on migrate the set-up to a different machine, like it has been stated here, I might consider. In that light however, I do not understand what the whole activation process is supposed to achieve?
