Importing .VOB Files for editing in VS9

Post by jrhack »

I am trying to include some old .VOB files from a DVD that was created from old home movies. The files I was able to copy down to my hard drive but VS9 does not have an import option for .VOB files. I searched the messages but couldn't find a solution. One post suggested I rename the file from .VOB to .MPEG2 but that didn't work. I get the message file format mismatch, which is the same I get on the .VOB file format. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Videostudio cannot open CSS-encrypted VOB files, only unencrypted ones such as the ones produced by Videostudio itself.

Since you are trying to capture from a DVD created from home movies, you should be able to do it. If you have a valid DVD Structure (with the .vob files) in a VIDEO_TS folder, then hit the CAPTURE tab, and then use the Import from DVD/DVD-VR option

.VOB Files

I will try to import from the DVD itself. From what I am hearing is that .VOB files can not be imported directly into VS9. I know I can using ARCSOFT (basic version no less). I thought VS9 was supposed to be the "end-all" of video editing, meaning it would be able to read any video file no matter where it resides.

No, Videostudio is a consumer-oriented program, it makes no claim to be the end-all of video editing. It clearly spells out the supported file formats on the product page, and this does not include VOB.

Last but not least, a VOB file is not a video file format, it is a container object specific to the DVD Video format, and can contain things other than video, such as multiple audio streams in different formats and languages, subtitles, and menus. In fact, if you are getting a format mismatch error, the VOB file in question may just contain something other than simple video...

.VOB Files

You may be right in that the .VOB files I have contain more then just the Video and Audio tracks, but when I select them to Play in PowerDVD, the only choices I have are for normal audio and only a single video track (and it plays fine).
And as far as file formats supported, why wouldn't Ulead incorporate this into it's programs like the competition? Don't get me wrong, I do like VS9, I just thought it would incorporate all medium formats to be able to edit and re-write (other then copyrighted files of course).

Be aware. I have personally found a conflict between Arcsoft Showbiz (version 1) and Ulead products which necessitated the removal of Arcsoft.

After uninstalling Showbiz, Ulead products functioned normally. It was a long time ago so I don't remember the exact issue.

You can't open individual VOB files directly, but you can open a (non-encrypted) DVD using the "Insert DVD / DVD-VR" command. That lets you select the scenes and audio track, which get converted to standard MPEG2 video files.

If for some reason you've encrypted your home movie, first decrypt it using DVD Decrypter (freeware) or a similar program.
