how to change characters encoding?

I need to make two versions of a poster, one in english and one in eastern europe language. English is no problem, but when I want to use some EE characters PI shows some messed up characters or squares instead. Is there a way how to choose the right encoding for TTF fonts or some other way around?
I'm using PhotoImpact XL SE.
