Hi,
I've got VS8. I stupidly deleted my AVI file downloaded off the camcorder. When I downloaded it again, I could re-link the production file to it, but the production file and timeline seem to be calibrated with respect to the start of the AVI file. Hence, the timeline edits don't fall exactly where they should, but are a second or so behind, because the recording of the AVI file was started a second earlier. Getting an EXACT same start point for the AVI file seems difficult. (I tried downloading a couple of freeware AVI splitters to pare down the start point, but they hung up.)
Second problem - even if I got the start point identical, edit points drift further and after 10-15 minutes are then 2+ seconds behind.
Any ideas, or do I have to re-edit from scratch ?
Thanks,
Peter
Relinking to a new copy of the AVI file

Hi
If you have the project showing the clip to be re-linked, you will know the length of the deleted clip.
Use the new clip in the overlay track.
Change the timeline scale to view more frames.
reduce the ends of the clip in the overlay track to match the main video track.
Should be posible to get a good match.
Tip
You can change the length of a clip by changing the time in the duration box top left.

Er, nope ! Maybe I didn't explain my problem - the AVI is about 30 mins long and it's been edited down to about 20 on the timeline, complete with titles, effects, audio track editing etc.
Putting the AVI file on the overlay track gives me the raw footage on top of edited footage (that now has the effects, titles etc appearing at the wrong time, and this time changes as the video progresses.) However, the edits are not applied to the raw footage (which I guess is what 'relinking' is.)
If I could find a way to split the overlay by scene, your suggestion might help recreate the video from scratch, but I'm struggling to find a smarter way.
Don't know if this helps, but I did successfully trim the AVI file to the correct start point, then I saved it as trimmed video. However, If I relink to the new AVI file, it says it successfully relinks, it shows the first scene, but thereafter, is a black/white horizontal line in the timeline.
Cheers,
Peter
