Please Help,the Final stage!!!

Post by sparkash »

I have finally edited my production and created chapters etc,

I hae created 2 mpeg files by clicking on 'create video' in share. I then click on create disc and import

these 2 files. They both have chapters (scene selections).

I have decided to burn both files on to one Dual layer dvd as the combined length is 100 minutes.

This is where the problem starts.

I am told that the DVD has been successfully burnt, but when i play the DVD, everything seems ok.

I can play the second file (40 mins long) all the way through and the scene selections work fine.

However, the first file (60 mins long) works up to about 30 minutes and then it starts to pixelate and just freezes.

The scene selections work up to this point, but any chapters after this point do not work.

Everything works fine when i preview it, before i burn it on to a DVD.

Please help as DL DVDs are not cheap and i have already wasted 3.

I am using VS9 (with the burning patch installed)

My DVD Burner is a Sony DVD RW DRU-800A Ky03.

I am using Infiniti professional DVD +R DL. On the DVD itself there is RW etched on the surface.

Hi

A lot more info is needed, this problem could be anything from wrong video files to Dvd player incompatibility.

What are the properties of your original video files.? :?: (right click a clip in the timeline, select properties)

After you Share Create Video, what are the properties of the rendered files.? :?: ( a thumbnail was placed in the library, right click the clip in the library, select properties)

Did VS render the files again prior to burning disc. :?:

Hi Trev,

I'm at work at the moment, i shall provide the extra info when i get home this evening. However i have also spoke to Technical support, the chap did not think the problem is due compatibility issues. He told me to :

1. import the files on to the project timeline and then do the create disk, rather than importing the mpeg files.

or

2. use a bitrate calculator to work out kbps and set to constant bitrate.

Any thoughts?

Hi

Working process.

I have always done:-

Share—Create Video File
Start new project
Share—Create Disc—Add Video

Read the top posting re recommended procedure, Just the first post,
http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=27

Using a bit-rate calculator is a good idea, You are then sure the completed files will fit to disc.

I like this one http://dvd-hq.info/Calculator.html

And another http://www.videohelp.com/calc.htm

But first of all check out those video properties.

Hi Trev,

I have used the Second calculator and with a video length of 100 minutes.

(One 60 min file and one 40 minute file), and using DL Video9

i have a bitrate of 9250 kbps.

Isnt this a bit high? I've heard that high bitrate values can cause problems. At the moment i use 8000kbps

Hi
I prefer the other calculator, but have checked both and 9250 seems to be the max.
Others on the forum that use Dual Layers will give you more info.

Using 8000 on a dual layer should not give you any problems, The quality may be lower but whether noticeable is a different matter. You will get you about 130 minutes of video to the disc.

As a guide a single layer disc at 8000 will give you 60 minutes.

Using a single layer discs for 100 minutes will require a bit rate of about 5500.
The quality of which should be good.

Solution Found, but new problem!!

Post by sparkash »

HI,

Thanks Trevor for your time.

I Have found the cause of my problem.

Within the create disc/preferences section, i did not specify the DVD Size. By default it was 4.7 GB, so i changed it to 8.5 GB, and i can view both files perfectly.

However, the chapters do not highlight when i move to them. They do work, but they just do not highlight. Any Ideas.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh!!!!!!!

The video is playing fine but the chapters (although work) do not highlight when selected. I am using a custom template with frames composed of flowers. I then decided to use simple linear frames and reburnt on to DVD.

Now, the Chapters work fine and do get highlighted but i am getting the original problem with pixelation halfway through and then it just freezes.

On the computer, the project works a treat without any problems. It only starts to pixelate once its burnt.

File properties

File Format:PAL DVD
File size :3,320,530 KB
Duration:3614.08 seconds

These are my video properties

Video type: Mpeg-2 video
Attributes 24 bits, 720x576 , 4.3
Frame rate : 25.0000frames/sec
Data rate: Variable bit rate (max 8000kbps )

Please Help! :(

Hi Sparkash

I thought you had cracked this problem.

In your first post you said (I am using Infiniti professional DVD +R DL. On the DVD itself there is RW etched on the surface.)

Are you burning to a Re-Writable Dvd?

I do not know much about DL discs or whether they make Re-Writable disc, but single layer disc RW do not play on all dvd players.

Have you tried burning to single layer discs?
Have these worked in the past with your set-up?

At 100 minutes you will have to render at 5500 kbps I think (use the bit rate calculator to check)

The only other thing I would change is the bit rate from Variable to CONSTANT.

Using DL discs you have enough capacity to use the Constant bit rate option, but you will have to render your project again.

The only reason to use variable is to reduce the file size to fit more minutes to a disc, if you have the capacity, and you have (DL) why not use constant bit rate.

In the past I had similar pixilation problems with Svcd using variable, changing to constant cured the problem.

It sounds to me like a burning issue and nothing to do with your quality settings. In addition to whats already been said above concerning RW material not playing in many DVD players I have also found that some DVD players are a bit more picky than others.

Some disks that play fine in one DVD player either refuse to play or freeze up in another DVD player. The cure here is to lower the burn speed. Although modern DVD burners can burn at 16x with the appropriate discs i have found that anything above 4x produces the above problem. Burning at 4x (or lower) usually results in a DVD that will play in anything capable of playing a DVD +r/-r.

The only time I have had good results with RW material is when the disc has never been used before. If you then wipe it clean and record over it a second time, you get those pixelating problems and the odd seizure.

I have also found that different burning software produces different results. This problem with re-used DVD RW discs is less prevailant when I burn with "CopyToDVD" than if I burn with Nero 6.

I get the impression that the laser produces weaker signal on the disc when you burn at higher speeds. Strangely the cheaper DVD players seem to cope better with home made DVD's than the expensive one's.

You should also check your DVD players specifications to make sure it is designed to play DVD +r/-r +rw/-rw.

Hi

I've re rendered the file at 9250 kbps with constant bitrate and it has worked. Both Chapters and video file play without any problems.

Thanks again Trevor.
