MSP 8 creates a new directory, with the same name as the DVP file you name your project and stores this in the same directory as the dvp file.
Every time you press manual save, (which for me is after every few edits), a new DVP file is created with a name increment of 1.
So if you save a project 30 times during an edit session, you can go back to each save point, and load that save on to the timeline. A great feature.

Yes, a great feature, but it's an "automatic backup" which doesn't need you to manually click Save. It is fired every few minutes as set in the Preferences :
File > Preferences > Automatically Save Every
The only problem I have with this system is that you have to make sure you put "Number of backups to" to 999 (the maximum). Otherwise (at least with the preview version), it would stop at say 99 and wouldn't make any more saves. It should warn you or something that you have reached the maximum nth backup and no more will be made...

And when you are finished with a project you can use the Smart Package feature to bundle everything up in a single folder for archiving. You can optionally include proxy files etc.
I usually archive short projects to a ZIP file and save 'em to a DVD-RAM. Large projects are also ZIP'ed but saved to removable HDD's.

This is not the case. If you set it for, say, 10 backups, it will continue backing up at the requested frequency, but it deletes the oldest, so that only 10 remain at any one time, but they are the 10 most recent ones. At least, that is what happened in the beta versions (I haven't yet received the definitive version). I do not recommend you set the number high as you will unnecessarily be using resources, as DVP files of complex projects in MSP8 can easily break the 1 Mb barrier each and may cause undue fragmentation.v2to8 wrote:Yes, a great feature, but it's an "automatic backup" which doesn't need you to manually click Save. That's good news then, but I thought in my preview version that it only went to 99 and then stopped. That's because the project I was working on became corrupt (using the built in TIFF masks) and then that's how I found out about the backups... The 99th wouldn't open either so I tried the 1st and that was near the very beginning of the project... Still, it may not have reached the time to do the 100th (overwrite the 1st) so I'll have to wait and see if it works for me on the next project
But it's good news and yes I would agree and that probably 99 is still too high!
