MSP 8.0 video cuts on a single track
I use MSP 7.3 and it is easy to create a transition which cross fades the audio and cuts on the video, simply by overlaying two clips. How do you do this on a single track in MSP 8?
Every time I overlay two clips in MSP 8 the audio cross fades but I can not turn off the video tansition to produce a cut. Can any one help?
MSP 8.0 is a big step up from MSP 7.3

Transition the audio but not the video 'eh?
In the Effects Manager (or the Customized effect dialog) set the transition degree to 0 at both the start and end keyframes. This will cause the A clip run full length and cut into the B clip with a bit of a trim.
IF, on the other hand, you set the keyframes transition degree to 100 the A clip would be slightly trimmed and the B clip will run full length.
Choose your weapon.
Otherwise you could split the audio and video, but then you'd have to account for A/V synch due to them having differing durations after one is overlapped and the other not.
This would work the same in an A/B roll system.

Simple;
1. define a custom transition with the settings I discribed using the transition dialogs ADD button.
2. load your clips into the Project Tray's Storyboard and invoke the Add to Timeline item from the context menu
3. in the Add to Timeline dialog you can define another default transition. Opt for the custom one you defined in #1.
4. now set the transition duration (in frames) and check the Auto Audio Crossfade box at the bottom of the page.
Click OK and all your clips will be placed on the timeline using the custom transition and with audio crossfades.
Voila!

Yes that works OK. Also, if you go into preferences and under the edit tab set the default video transition to the newly created custom cut, it will be applied to the timeline when building up a clip sequence manually.
This is the most frequent transition I use, video cut and audio X fade, so a good fix. Maybe Ulead will allow the option for no video transition to be selected in preferences, so nothing has to be dragged to the timeline to produce a cut?

Just noticed a problem with using a custom cut transition, the video cuts OK but the audio does not X fade correctly. When the transition is used the first audio track does not fade down. This might be a bug fix for Ulead.
Just tried a number of other non custom transitions and the audio does the same. I have audio set to X fade in preferences. The probelm occurs when the first clip is black and the audio is faded up on the 2nd clip manually to produce a fade from black.
Also, when I change an applied cut custom transition to a X fade in the transitions setup, the effect runs backwards.
I am already looking foward to Service Pack 1....... and not having to work around the program.

Just found another problem..
Place a black clip on the timeline as clip 1
Place a video clip on the same timeline and overlay clip 1
Manually adjust the volume on clip 2 during the overlay from zero to 100%
This produces a video and audio fade up from black to clip 2
Then, place a 3rd clip (clip 3) on the timeline and overlay with clip 2
The auto audio X fade now does not work between clip 2 and 3, it only
ramps up clip 3 and does not ramp down clip 2.
It can be fixed by not manually adjusting clip 1's audio first, overlay clip 2
on clip 1 and the auto audio X fade then works OK, then go back and adjust clip 1 lead in audio ramp.
Also after placing many clips, say 30 or more on a single timeline the
response time of MSP 8.0 slows down.

A case could be made that since you modified the volume of clip 2 manually, they are assuming you know what volume level you want and that disqualifies the clip from any auto crossfades.
Hard to say if that is the intended behaviour or a bug.
One way to work around this would be to place the color clip into a virtual clip giving it an audio track, then insert that on your main timeline in place of the color clip. That way you don't have to manually change the volume of clip 2.

I will try the virtual clip, yet to play with this feature. MSP 8 has just crashed so now could be a good time... only lost 5 mins of editing as the auto save works well.
After a manual audio level change on a clip, follow-on inserted clips should revert to auto audio X fades unless this feature is turned off, so I think it is inconsistent or a bug.
Even with the gremlins in MSP 8, my edit is coming together faster than with MSP 7.3

DVX;
Yes, I see this and it's real but this also isn't the best workflow. Try the workflow below. Nevertheless I've reported yours to Ulead.
Instead of manually ramping up clip #2's audo from the black clip try inserting a silence clip with clip #1 and auto crossfade to clip #2 from that. The auto audio crossfade from clip #2 to clip #3 will now work as expected.
This is what slience clips are for
