Videostudio 9 crashing during rendering

Post by Snelvis »

Greetings,

I am having major problems with Videostudio 9 crashing during the rendering process. I am getting the "Ulead has encountered a problem and needs to close" message. My project is about 1hr 10mins long but it has taken me near to 40 hours of capturing/editing and I hope my efforts are not going to go to waste. The error signitures are as follows:

When rendering in Create Video:
AppName: vstudio.exe AppVer: 9.0.0.0 ModName: mpgvout.004
ModVer: 1.2.9.23 Offset: 00025f16

When rendering in Create DVD:
AppName: vstudio.exe AppVer: 9.0.0.0 ModName: mpgvout.004
ModVer: 1.2.9.23 Offset: 00025f1b

My project properties are:
PAL (25 fps)
MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-PAL), 16:9
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo

This is my first time using Videostudio and everything was going great up until I wanted to get my project onto a DVD. On the first few attempts, it was happening between 60 - 99% of the render process but now after many attempts, it usually happens in the 2 - 6% range.

I have run PC Rescue to clean up/repair my registry and I have done all of the system tweaks in the VS manual. I have about 40GB of available hard drive space, I am running 1GB of RAM on an AMD Athlon 3000 Mhz PC with Windows XP (service pack 2) as my operating system.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated as it is driving me absolutely nuts and I sure hope I don't have to start from scratch with another video editing program as I am very happy with my project.

Also, if I do a reinstall - do I lose my project altogether?

Cheers,
Snelvis

Sorry -- I appreciate all the other detail, but there are two strange things in your message. You give two rendering options, but neither are the exact options available in VS 7/8/9. First you say Rendering in Create Video and the other one is Create DVD. As far as I am aware, you can go Share > Create Video File and then choose the format you wish (e.g. PAL or NTSC DVD) or else Share > Create Disc > DVD. If you had read the sticky ANNOUNCEMENT at the very top of this particular Board, you would know that we recommend against using the latter straight from the timeline. But I am not clear that you were necessarily using the former procedure either. You need to tell us exactly what you were doing before you got to the rendering stage. For instance, you have your edited video in the timeline, with all the edits and additions, transitions, etc done. But then what do you do? If you do anything apart from going Share > Create Video File > DVD, then you could have your problem right there.

And we also need to know the source of your video and its properties, not just the project properties you used.

Sorry my orginal message was a bit vague. I should have mentioned that I have followed all of the steps in the sticky announcement so I have tried the following:

Open Videostudio 9>Videostudio Editor>Open Project>Share>Create Video>PAL DVD 16:9

Open Videostudio 9>Videostudio Editor>Tools>Create Disc

Open Videostudio 9>Videostudio Editor>Share>Create Disc

The first option is the one I have tried the most as it was recommended in the announcement but I have tried all of them a number of times - each of them give me the "Ulead Videostudio 9 has encountered a problem and needs to close" partway through the rendering process.

My Capture Properties used for the project are:

MPEG Files
24 Bits, 720 x 576, 25.00 fps
Lower Field First
MPEG-2
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 7000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
MPEG Audio, 44.1 KHz, Stereo

If I click on a clip and select properties, these are as follows:
Video Type MPEG-2 Video, Lower field first
Frame Rate: 25000 frames/sec
Attributes: 24 bits, 720 x 576, 16:9
Data Rate: Variable bit rate (max 9000 kbs)

The source of my video is a Canon MV850i DV camera. I am not sure how to get the exact properties of my source video - could you point me in the right direction for this and I will post them as well.

Thanks,
Snelvis

There is enough information there now. The only thing I can think of is that it may have something to do with the fact that you capture direct to MPEG format. This is of course possible, and your computer would appear up to the job. But as you will also have read in the top post, many of us here (though not all) believe you should first capture in DV/AVI format, do your editing, then Share > Create Video File > PAL DVD.

There is also the possibility that your original capture could be at a bitrate (max. 9000) which is a fraction too high. Normally, the maximum rate used by Video Studio is 8000 bps.

I too am having problems - I have tried to burn for 3 days now with absolutly no luck.

I also created the project - then saved as an AVI - to disk - then reopend VS9 and tried to create a DVD from the AVI - this also crashed -

I am getting to believe that VS9 has a major problem in creating the "video tranistion" before it can Burn DVD's.

What was freezing/locking up my burn.

CPU temperature. My computer has 4 HD and not enough cooling. Rendering is math - cpu proceesing intense. Fixed it by taking the side panel off. ;-)

Also - to stop making coasters, don't burn the dvd, save as an ISO file and then using a free program (burn4free) burn the dvd. Coaster factory closed!

Good luck.

Snelvis,

Have you tried a smaller project? Perhaps create a new project with 10 - 15 minutes of the video clip on the time line and then follow the "Recommended Procedure" to create an .iso file.

If this works, then it is possible that there is "something" in your video file - some particular part of it or perhaps some combination of effects etc, that is causing VS 9 to have a hernia - if this is the case then we can provide further clues as you how to isolate the problem and work around it.

Anyway, let us know how you get on,
Peter

P.S. WRT a reinstall, your project file (.vsp) will be in the "Working" directory (File -> Preferences). So if you copy your .vsp file, any "other" files you may have created (such as still images etc from the video file) to some "safe" location then you should be OK to do a de-install and then a re-install. From memory, the default location for this directory is somewhere outside of the ULead install directories, so it won't be affected by the de/re-install But after all that work it won't hurt to "play safe" :-).

I am also getting that failure saying VS9 has to close. I am editing a few mpeg files. They were files on my HD that I captured with an external analog to digital converter. The device only captures to mpeg 2 and the converter uses its own dedicated software . The rendering in VS9 gets to 99% and then gives the message VS9 has encountered an error and must close. I am choosing share and create a video file.

Tell ya what. Here's an idea for VS10 .. take away a few options if you must, but include one that pops up right away and says ... "hey ya dope, you're doing it wrong, stop now before you waste the whole day" :)

Try to isolate what in your video project is causing VS9 to crash. To do this (time consuming but it should work!) is to split your project at the 50% mark and try building each half separately. Hopefully one half (the first one you try!) will fail indicating which portion of your project/video/transitions etc is causing the problem. Assuming you can fail one portion of your project in this manner, take that half and half it again - repeat the build attempt on each subsequent half, further isolating the problem. Hopefully you will be able to track the problem down in this manner and isolate it to some (hopefully small) section of your project - whether it be a particular piece of video, a transition, a still or whatever. Then "work" with the isolated portion i.e. delete it (:-)), change the transition or whatever and you will hopefully "work around " the problem. Then make the change back into the original project (you did work with a copy of your project file didn't you? :-)) and hopefully VS9 won't crash!

Best of luck,
Peter

This is a terrible thing to admit, but I am at a point where I'm so confused with the various programs I have, and the various attempts at creating a file which I plan to use in DVD Workshop to menu, that I'm not even sure which original files I used for this particular failure.

I was under the assumption that the original files are not affected by the output of these programs, so I'm not sure I understand your question regarding using a copy of the file.

I believe I posted in a different message, that when I give up on the editing programs I use DVD Workshop to trim and menu with no problems ever.

I need to take a more organized approach to these little projects. I foolishly assumed I could capture my old 8mm and vhs stuff to file and just make it work in VS9. I will be much more careful about noting the things I'm doing.

Sorry for the lack of clarity in my message :-)

I was refering to you working with a copy of your project file (.vsp) - it contains all the various clip start/ends that point into your original video file(s), transition references and still image references etc. By "halving" the contents of what you see on the timeline you are effectively modifying the contents of your project file - not your original video files. So by taking a copy and working with that, you preserve not only your original project file but also not in any way affecting your original video files.

Does this help clarify my earlier message?

My suggestions are based on the assumption that some (unique?) combination of how you have put together your project is exposing a bug in VS 9 - and the aim of this forum (since we are not ULead tech support :-)) is to help users with problems either correct how they go about producing their DVD or find a work around if it really does appear to be a bug in VS 9. For example, I "solved" similar problems I encountered using VS 8 using the mentioned technique - once I had isolated the offending element of the project, I was invariably able to "work around" the problem and produce a viewable DVD :-)

Yes, thank you .. I understand now. I hope I saved the project file before I started to render it. I must have

I will check and try to get as specific as I can.

May I ask, although I did post a different thread that wasn't replied to as of yet, but is relevant to at least one of my failures.... Does VS9 support adding clips from different formats. For example, a small AVI then an mpeg2 or so, then can transitions be added between clips and even possibly some voice over. Or does the program require all one type clip.

thanks much ...

VS9 crashes

Post by marcir »

Hi there
I just want to mention that i just finished a 12:19 minutes project, but when I want to burn it to dvd VS9 crashes and the program closes by itself when the detailed progress bar reaches 99% during the first stage of the burning process. I have tried burning the dvd three times, but VS9 keeps closing the program by itself.
My pc is a Sony vaio VGC-RA834G.this is my first video project, and I'd say that 90% of my pc resources are available.Thank you for any suggestions.
