Screen Resolution

Post by Bobm03 »

Downloaded VS9 Trial yesterday.
Installed fine, works fine, yada, yada.
Will probably buy it.

There is one small annoyance which has to do with me and my eyesight.
On my 17" monitor, my normal screen resolution is 800x600 which I can use more or less satisfactorily.

VS9 tells me to change to at least 1024x768. So I do, but almost everything is so small that I find it rather difficult to read and work with, without or with glasses (at any distance ).

Yes, I know that I can increase the size of the video screen. Nice touch, but is there any way that I can defeat this required overall change and continue to use my normal 800x600 resolution?

This was, for me, the deal breaker about updating DVD/CD PictureShow to Version 4. I doubt that this will break the deal for buying VS9, however.

Hi Bob,

Odd no-one has come back to you on this one.. There must be a host of users with somewhat less than perfect eyesight who could give the benefit of their workarounds.

I, too find that my eyesight is getting no better and in particular, my left eye is considerably weaker than the right. So, I have to wear quite strong varifocals when using the PC. Sadly I don't think there is an easy solution to this problem. Not many monitors at 17" or above will be set to 800x600 any more, and besides picture quality in multi-media work is everything, so the higher resolution is always going to be the most popular. Most modern multi-media/graphics programs are looking for a minimum resolution of 1024x768... and 17" and+ LCD monitors will often have 1280x1024 default screen size. Unfortunately, I think the solution will inevitably involve hardware changes.. whether this is in the form of spectacles, or Monitor, or both.. Each option is as expensive as the other, it seems.. Certainly is the case in UK... although not sure about Canada.. but if you do have to go belt and braces adopting both as I have, you can legitimately feel a little aggrieved about it.

My own way of dealing with the problem... I have a 3 x PC LAN Two of which are dedicated to Video and Photographic work, and are linked via KVM switch to a fairly old but pretty fabulous Nokia 445Xpro 20" CRT monitor, which is ideal for Video Production Work... Then there is the Dogsbody PC... this one, that looks after everything else, and which has its own 19" LCD monitor. Both the CRT and LCD displays are set to 1280x 1024, so I have the same problem as you in that respect... even worse you might say. The varifocals after getting used to them, take care of the Video and Photographic work OK, and I have adjusted the rest of the PC Interface to increased icon sizes and program windows viewing properties set to display Large text.. Ulead interface is reasonably sized within the prescribed resolution, so surprisingly perhaps is less of a problem than most other applications. It all took a bit of getting used to, but bedded in quickly enough and works fine for me now..

Possibly not altogether a solution for you, but at least an indication that you are not on your own..

Best wishes
George

Thanks, George. It is nice to learn thant "I am not alone."

I did a fair amount of fooling around with VS9 on Friday, both with and without my tri-focals. I am getting familiar with everything and learning where the key controls/elements are. Maybe I'm just adapting faster than I thought I would or could.

Much appreciated,
Bob

Hi

I had the same problem until I upgraded to a 19" monitor. As a work around, you can change the font size that Windows uses. To do this, right click on an empty part of the Desktop, choose Properties, and click the Appearance Tab.

From here you can choose the font size (normal, large, extra large). If you want to change the font or font size of a particular screen element (window title, icon text size, etc.), click the Advanced button.
